“Fantastic ranch holiday”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

Our holiday was fantastic.
We were collected by pick-up from Kamloops Airport and driven for 2.5 hours amid striking scenery to Siwash Ranch, where we were greeted enthusiastically. A late lunch was provided at 2-15pm on arrival.
There is a large range of activities and we were interested particularly in horse riding. Great care was taken in choosing an appropriate horse for the duration of the stay and we were escorted each day by amazing wranglers. They catered for a wide range of riding ability and arranged activity accordingly. Each day, we groomed and tacked our horses and really enjoyed our first taste of western riding. The riding groups were small, four in our case. Once confident in our ability, we were offered the chance to ride unescorted and were taken on faster rides up to cantering pace. I would suggest changing the trail map to make it closer to scale, although one learns the routes quite quickly. The scenery was delightful and we were blessed by fine weather.
In addition, there was easy access to lake activities, skeet shooting, fishing, mountain biking over hilly terrain, hiking, yoga and an informative survival course.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were provided at fixed but convenient time and the food and British Columbian wines were excellent. A basket of snacks and drinks was provided to each residence before breakfast and soft drinks/cookies/fruit were available freely throughout our stay.
The barn accommodation is conveniently close to the house and saddling area and overlooks the lake. It is idyllic.
The small number of guests facilitated conversation and we enjoyed the ranch house ambience before and after dinner.
Many thanks to everyone at the ranch for a superb holiday.

Our accommodation in our 'tent' took my breath away from the very start and from then, and ten days on, I could not have hoped or wished for more; five star service - food, service, horses, massage, yoga, fishing, shooting, rugby!, tubing, sunshine, sunsets, conversation and fun. Thank you fantastic team/family for all, we'll never forget you. Love from James, Jan, Cal and Alex xxxx

Room Tip: Tents are amazing

Ahhhhh, S"igh"wash! That is how we felt on our trip to this amazing place. My husband and I have been searching for a ranch that would not only give me my full horse immersion experience, but would also offer opportunities for other activities that he could enjoy. Take golf off the table (too resorty) and that leaves fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, and other outdoor related things to do. Siwash offers all that, plus gourmet cooking, massage, yoga, and a chance to stay in a luxurious tent. Certainly I was in heaven as I could ride all day (especially after my body adjusted to the soreness). My husband enjoys riding, but wanted the opportunity to do other things. Allyson made sure that we did everything that we set out to do (well almost all, we chose not to skeet shoot and instead took an afternoon off to just enjoy the beautiful weather from the porch of our tent.)

The website says it all! I even spoke to Allyson prior to booking our date, and just our conversation reassured me that Siwash is the place that we had been searching for. From the moment Barney picked us up at the airport we felt welcomed. The staff was incredible and as I have food allergies, everything that was served to me was made to respect those allergies. Thank you Derek, Kathy and Brianna. The tent experience was amazing! A warm toasty bathroom for those chilly mornings and nights, and how can you beat showering while stargazing! The riding was perfect! I am an experienced rider and respect the fact that you can't always "run" a horse. In fact, control over your horse is the sign of a true rider. Besides, who would want to miss the beautiful scenery? For every ride we took we had our own guide, and we loved learning about each of their backgrounds. We were offered the opportunity to go out by ourselves, but there was no need to, as we loved the company of each of the guides.

On the days that my husband did something different in the afternoon, I was paired with a lovely young adult who was also an experienced rider. We had so much fun!

At night, after dinner, hanging at the ranch house with the other guests, was so lovely. We met some really nice people, mostly from the UK. I loved meeting people from other countries.

I could go on forever about this place and our experience. All in all, it met every expectation that we had. I did yoga every morning, had a massage almost every other day to take care of sore muscles, and rode as much as I wanted to. My husband fished, rode and relaxed (hard for him). Thank you to Allyson, Roy, Jessica, Marshall, and the amazing staff. We hope to return!

Room Tip: The tent experience is the way to go. They are private and have beautiful views. Just be aware that...

We stayed at the ranch for 10 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. The beauty and solace of the place totally detaches you from the outside world. The staff were all so friendly and attentive - nothing was too difficult for them, and everything was done with a smile.

We had mixed riding experience and yet Allyson managed to pick the right horses to match each one of us. My wife had never ridden before and only intended to take a couple of lessons - but she ended up riding every day of our stay and loved every minute of it.

Our daughter, who is an experienced rider - had the opportunity to do more challenging rides and probably covered every trail on the ranch - twice !

We went on a guided hike, I fished in hammer lake with Roy and Marshall (and Barnie) and tried my hand at skeet shooting - all of which were exhilarating.

The knowledge of the guides and wranglers was impressive to say the least - and they seemed to understand the ability of every rider to ensure that we stayed within our limitations. This goes a long way to making the experience enjoyable for all of us.

There were a few families at the ranch during our stay and the youngsters all seemed to be having such a great time between horse riding, swimming & kayaking in the lake, playing touch rugby, boules, roasting marshmallows, and mega games of pictionary - it was difficult to get them to bed at night.

We stayed in one of the canvas cabins - luxury at it's finest. The location and tranquility is breathtaking - not to mention hot coffee delivered every morning for the perfect start to our day.

The quality of the food was as good as we have experienced anywhere in the world - and was always more than we could eat.

There are two things that make a holiday great - the place and the people, and we were lucky to have both at Siwash.

Allyson, Roy, Marshall, and Jesse are the perfect hosts and we will certainly be back.

Hands down, best service I have ever received from any hotel or restaurant. You will leave here with the same feeling my wife, three kids and I all had, and that is 'wow' we will miss that place. The food rivaled any of our hometown Chicago's high end restaurants and the overall experience is one that will remain with my kids forever. Horse riding in Gods Country, swimming/paddle boarding/kayaking/canoeing in private secluded pristine lake, learning wilderness survival, bonfire with s'mores and high end wine/tea/whatever you wanted. We took a flyer on this place based on all the five star testimonials and Siwash delivered on all levels. Seeing how difficult it was for my kids to leave is the biggest testament in my mind of what a special place this is. Highly, highly recommend this if you are looking for a family vacation that will truly make an impact.

As we love horse riding we booked for 4 nights at the Ranch. We have been upgraded in a tent
(we were the only customers). The welcome from a girl of the staff was very good.
Before arriving we have completed all the forms regarding horse riding (our ability,experiences...) and we asked about having diner later than 6.30 pm,the answer was that is was not possible,we were in a Ranch.
The first morning we go for the horse riding:about 1H30 to talk about the way to ride..and preparing the horses and then we have been riding for 1 hour (only walking)
the following day we asked about trotting and galoping and in a 2H30 ride we have been trotting
for 5 minutes!!it is not was we were expecting.
The other thing is about the lack of flexibility in the schedule of your day:you come back from horse riding around 12.30-1pm and the lunch is at 1pm;so if you want to take a shower you will be late and they let you know that they don't like it;same if you are late for diner, you don't have time to enjoy a drink in front of the beautiful view you just have to hurry!
So we did complain to Alyson about the fact we didn't feel comfortable here and she answered
that she did everything she had to do and that's it.
So the last 2 days for us were a nightmare;no more communications, she spoke to her staff so the relationship was then different and her husband had a really bizarre attitude with us.
We were really happy to leave on the last day without seeing her.
I really think the Ranch can be a nice place for families but not for people who come here to be close to nature and enjoy it in the way they want to.

Thank you for your feedback. When visiting a resort like the remote Siwash Lake Ranch, which specializes in luxury wilderness vacations, it is important to embrace the ranch lifestyle. Unfortunately, you were not interested in our establishment’s culture, which blends traditional ranch life, luxury, and nature-based tourism.

Sleep was a concern, because one of you was always cold and the other hot and feeling claustrophobic, which made sharing a bed a challenge. We were very empathetic, but weren't able to remedy the incompatibility despite various attempts. You told us you hadn’t had a decent sleep in three months of traveling prior to visiting the ranch. Likewise, the ranch's food, beverage, and activity routines were not well tolerated. Hence, you were disrespectful to well-meaning staff and owners. So much so that after two days at the ranch you were asked politely to leave. You declined, preferring to stay, despite an obvious distaste for the nature of a ranch style vacation.

You were guided on a variety of lovely rides to our favourite places on the range and were only kept to a walking pace for your own safety. Everyone who rides at Siwash is guided according to his or her abilities as riders. The safety of our guests, animals and guides is paramount. Even though you greatly over-rated your riding abilities on pre-arrival forms, we took you on what we consider to be challenging rides for your skill level—over a variety of rugged terrain—while focusing on the amazing scenery and complete horse experience amidst nature.

After being asked to leave you became rude and refused even to make eye contact with the owners, Allyson and Roy, or the service staff. If you feel that you weren't attended well by management and staff during the latter half of your stay, it may be because you clearly disregarded all efforts to accommodate extraordinary requests and enhance your experience.

At Siwash, we welcome all types of people and strive our very best to make their stay personalized, unique and memorable. Mostly, guests who travel to the ranch are kindred, like-minded individuals from around the world, who seek someplace special. The odd few who may find it difficult to be courteous and receptive to a ranch experience might perhaps consider a standard hotel stay versus an adventurous wilderness vacation.

Siwash Lake Ranch manages to provide luxury & beauty while maintaining charm and character. The Ranch experience was superb - Allyson and Roy know how to pick a great team that deliver for their guests in the BC wilderness. The staff were of very high quality. The food was delicious. The horses were exceptional and so well looked after. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a wilderness adventure with all the luxuries included. After a morning of learning how to fly fish, and the afternoon of riding, I had a wonderful massage in a canvas tent listening to the birds singing.
