“Great introduction to the history of the Black Forest”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Historical farm homes and buildings from as early as the 16th Century. Really developed a feel for the architecture of the time and the integration of the farm and the home under one huge roof! Reasonably priced, lots of families ( visited on a Saturday) and the lunch in the restaurant was tasty. We were there about 4 hours, but could have seen a lot less and still have been satisfied.

“What an excellent experience”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

We loved this place and it's authentic feel. Great to see these beautiful buildings preserved but still accessible to people like us.

We stayed for hours and enjoyed it a lot.

The restaurant was good but they got swamped by a coach and our food took ages. Would recommend an early start.

“OK if you're in the area but could have been so much better”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

I think the idea of an open air museum is to get a sense of going back in time and seeing how people once lived and whilst the buildings and place itself was OK, there should have been more of a human element to bring it to life. There were a few people wandering about dressed up in traditional clothing but it was fairly limited.
We used the Shwarzwald card to get in so it was OK but don't know if I would've gone out of my way or have thought it terrific value if I'd paid cash.
So: if you're in the area and planning to 'activate' the card for something else on that day then I;d say it was worth a visit. Otherwise - not sure.

“The open air historical museum is a must-see”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

The Black Forest open air museum has original buildings arranged on a large plot of land. These historical structures include homes, barns, churches, saw mills, and gardens. It is educational and fun. Signage is in English. We skipped the audio guides and wandered around the complex. Buildings range in age from those constructed in the late 1500s to early 1800's. It is a well done assemblage of what life was like in the Black Forest, and kudos to those who developed this museum in order to preserve an important part of life from this community.

“Traditional Black Forest homes brought history to life!”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

I love history so seeing the original Black Forest homes with furnishings of the period was a peek of how German families lived. It was a living museum with live demonstrations of spinning thread and woodworking. I'm a teacher so wish my students could have experienced it too. It reminded me of the Log Cabin Village in Fort Worth. I think its great to keep traditions alive through living examples.
