Last December, my boyfriend and I traveled to Pappenheim to do some research in town. Of all days, we chose the ones between Christmas and New Year's, and we ended up being the only guests in the hotel. But instead of possibly mourning the loss of some welcome downtime, the owners went out of their way to give us the best possible experience. The room, though old fashioned, was lovely, with lots of windows going straight onto the Altmühl River, any issue we could have got resolved in no time (as an example: their WIFI signal wasn't strong enough to penetrate through those old walls--we were given a cable right away to help us out and make sure we could do the necessary online research for our research); the house itself is full of history, and we enjoyed much of it through Mr. Rasch's accounts and a special tour; everyone working in the hotel was super-nice and helpful, making phone calls for us and using their connections so that we could make the most out of our stay research-wise. And the cuisine was phenomenal. Considering that we stayed there right after a very food-heavy and delicious Christmas, this really says it all! We had a great time, and though Pappenheim was rather dead during that week, we still think back very fondly to those days by the Altmühl. The plan is definitely to come back in summer!
