Nieudegat Gites
Reviewed 21 August 2013

For a family of 4 who were new to the Perigord Noir, Olwen and Mike Gelling's Nieudegat Gites was a great choice. If you are active like us and have lots you want to get done, Olwen/Mike's local understanding of hiking and biking trails (they are involved in the local biking club themselves),recommendations for evening and day markets, and best sites to see is extremely helpful. If you want to sit back and chill, their onsite pool, lovely location in an eminently accessible countryside (lots of relaxed walks around), and proximity to popular towns like Sarlat and Les Eyzies can't be beat. And when you're on their site, it's quiet and you feel completely absorbed in the Dordogne landscape. We were very happy with the facilities as well, and ability to cook and cater for ourselves. And Olwen also installed a picnic table for us outside our little gite so we could eat out when we felt like it. I should also mention her patience in helping us prepare for the vacation (lots of email traffic before vacation getting our itinerary in order) and even calling on our behalf to bike and canoe places to confirm reservations. We really couldn't have asked for more, and are just back from a thrilling vacation made extra special for their care and interest. And for all this extra help, the accommodations were very reasonably priced when compared to alternatives, and that in high season (August 10-17). I should also mention that there were both families and couples staying at the Gite and I think it's perfectly great for both types of travellers. The Mellings also get groups of bikers on training or on bike holidays. Thanks Olwen and Mike for everything!

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are comfy and similar. We had the one at the end near a wooden fence and perha...

My friend and I stayed here in June 2013 and loved it. Olwen and Mike were so nice and welcoming. The gite is cozy with upstairs and downstairs sleeping accommodations; for just the two of us it actually felt luxurious!. The surrounding landscape is richly wooded and a great escape from city life. The small kitchen was perfect for breakfasts and light meals made from the produce from the fantastic local markets. The overall experience was intimate and fun. WiFi service came in handy as did the use of the laundry facilities.

Room Tip: Be sure to follow Olwen's directions to find the place - the Google directions aren't quite...

Really welcoming owners. Gite was small but had everything you need. It was fine for a family of 4 but the weather was great so we didn't spend any time inside. Lovely fenced pool with parasols around. Max depth 2m. Has machine to provide current in the pool if required so you can swim for miles without turning round!! Beautiful location with easy access to River Dordogne and major attractions in the area. Owners very knowledgeable. Small supermarket & boulangerie 3.5k away.

We had a wonderful holiday in the Dordogne and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay than Nieudegat Gites, or better hosts than Olwen and Mike. From the welcoming drink when we arrived, to the suggestions of where to visit or eat out, Olwen and Mike helped to make our holiday special.

My girlfriend and I had an extremely enjoyable stay here for a few days in August; a relatively basic but pleasant gite in a small complex close to Sarlat. The owner, Olwen, went out of her way to make us feel at home and the location, overlooking hills and sunsets, was a delight. One thing; you are in quite close proximity to other guests so if you are looking for isolation this is not for you.

We spent 10 days in mid August at Nieudegat and had a wonderful time. The gite apartments are ideal holiday accommodation & are well appointed. Wi-fi is available if you need to keep in touch with the outside World (not recommended!).
Nieudegat is set in 3>4 acres of woodland in the village of Simeyrols. It's peaceful and tranquil and the big plus for most families with kids is the swimming pool; it's huge and a godsend on a hot summer's day.The hosts (Mike & Olwen) are super helpful and added to the enjoyment of our stay.
Simeyrols is ideally situated in the Dordogne: 10mins from the river and 30 mins from the main town, Sarlet, which is one of France's most popular historic towns.
There are lots of little villages to explore and restaurants to die for. One of the highlights of our holiday was canoeing down the Dordogne, just marvelous .
We'll definitely be going back and will most likely go to Nieudegat because it was such an ideal base from which to explore the Dordogne.
