“Worth the Time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 December 2013

It only takes a couple of moments to go back in time and see what used to be. I was impressed with the Heritage Museum and the items they have been provided with. We have an area so rich in history. It was surprising the people I knew in the photographs. It is worth the time to take a moment to stop in and see who has changed the face of the town we now call home.

“A good place to learn about the Great Fire of 1922”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

This is a small community museum in a small town so no one should expect first class exhibitions. That being said, this place is a little treasure trove of artifacts on the history of Haileybury - its history, its founder, the Great Fire that ravaged the town in 1922 and other historical facts. There is a great restored tramway that was used as temporary accommodations for refugees from the 1922 fire. The location in the old Ontario Provincial Police station also gives you an idea of what the nature of small town policing (complete with two holding cells). If you are visiting for a few days in Haileybury, it is worth visiting.

Fire Documentation and pictorial and artifact presentation are great. Also a display on Leslie McFarlane, ghost writer of The Hardy Boys series and a few Nancy Drew books. Tours available most times

“Tracking our ancester, Alex Montgomery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2012

In August 2012, My sister and I and our spouses visited the Haileybury Museum.
We were most interested in visiting the home-town area of our mother, Margie Montgomery, and her family. Alex and his wife Annie and their two young boys arrived in New Liskeard in 1902.
Both men at the museum were very helpful. Stories that our mother had told us came to life as we toured the exhibits. Most dramatic was the great fire of the early 1920s. We had heard about the tragedies and about people wading out into the lake.
The museum had records about the trolley line and Alex being motorman, inspector, etc.
There were many items of interest that preserve the history of the area. The antique fire engine is a treasure. If you go there, you'll hear about the Hardy Boys' mysteries.
