Ok, so you're wondering what to see in Vancouver. Is it a clear day or evening? Do you wonder what Vancouver looks like from way up high but aren't interested in going up the Grouse Mountain Gondola? Are you unable to walk for those special views like me, an arthritis sufferer, whose now limited on my ability to walk to those great spots? Well, if you're driving,.....if not rent a car because, this view is worth every penny on a clear day. Take the # 1 Hywy, to the North Shore, or North Vancouver as it's known, heading north. Take a right at the Cypress Mountain turn off. It's long switchbacks gaining altitude quite rapidly. There's the look out on the right side of the road. About 3 km from the highway turnoff up the mountain. No walking required, just get out of the car, stretch, breathe, and drink up on a spectacular view. Bring your cameras. I like taking my pictures in panorama but I don't have the expensive panorama cameras. So, I take a series of photos.........have them digitally stitched at a professional photo shop, usually costing approximately $25.00 Canadian per/stitch. A single picture tells a very small story. A panoramic leaves people with the actual image you saw. Great for memories. For the young and vigorous, cycling up isn't as fun as coming down, on warm clear nights,......this is a very very romantic stop if you're touring through with that special loved one. Enjoy the beauty of Vancouver and the greater Vancouver regional district. The gulf islands and Vancouver island in the distance across Georgia Strait, all the way to the states.

We have lived in Vancouver for 10 years and usually travel to other resorts to ski the beautiful mountains of British Columbia. This spring break we chose to try Cypress and what a discovery it was. Kids in scooter camp….awesome…..great instructors who understood the blend of interaction and fun….it is based on first come first booked…so get there early and take advantage of the closer car park spot. Snow was great for this time of year, gorgeous sunny days, with some good variety and way more affordable than the larger resorts nearby. The restaurant is large enough, with reasonable choices and with the usual price points you get in other resorts. We loved it so much for the day we went back for three more. We were pleasantly surprised at how good this day out was for our family. We will be back!!

Cypress is the biggest and best of the the three local hills. There is enough to keep you busy for a day. You must take the Skychair on a clear day...the 360 degree panarama of mountain, ocean , and city is the most spectacular view in Canada - a more beautiful view than what you see at Whistler which is soley mountainous.

If you are only able to visit local Vancouver mountains, then Cypress is your best choice. If not, I would recommend venturing further to some of the bigger mountains with better snow. The views are fantastic on a clear day though - especially from sky chair which only intermediates can visit.

On a good day Cypress can be great. There is enough terrain that everyone can spread out over the mountain and find some good tracks.

More often than not, snow conditions are variable which leads to an extremely high concentration of skiers/boarders on the 2 primary green runs (Collins and Panorama). The freeze/thaw conditions and heavy snow very often leads to icy conditions. The runs are like destruction derby - people are going everywhere and at speeds much higher than safe. There is no safe spot to be on these runs when they are busy - safety officers are rarely seen. Especially on night sessions when the lights are extremely poor.

The chairlifts like sky chair are very old and could do with an upgrade - watch out for the metal bar in the middle which is not common on lifts all around the world.

The bus up to cypress is helpful, but mid-week schedules are not regular so you need to time your visit well. It is very strange that there is not a public bus running from downtown - it seems very unpractical to travel to Lonsdale rather than catch a bus in the CBD near a sky train station.

I've been snowboarding at Cypress since the day they started to allow it. I've ridden all three local mountains and Cypress is still best because of these reasons: Best terrain and access - it's easy to go from your car (if you have a good parking spot) to the lift. There's glade skiing, nice groomed runs, and even some backcountry (but it's illegal to go there now). If the snow sucks, the groomed runs are still fun. Best lodge: it's new (from 2010) and huge. Best lifts: many high speed lists covering almost all the terrain. Very few flat spots. Now the cons: crowds - this has recently become too popular and some days, the parking is so full that it's a LONG walk to the lift. Backcountry: they've closed it off as too many people got lost. If you're wiling to risk it, there's great terrain off the Skychair but you have to duck the rope and possibly get arrested, lost or die. The terrain park is good for pros but not enough stuff for intermediate. In fact, there's no halfpipe anymore (as far as I know) but they should make a small one so we can get the young riders in there training & ready for Winter Games 23.
