After a scorching hot exhausting day at the royal welsh show we stumbled across the Portway inn.
We really fell on our feet . The staff were delightful and very attentive. The food was of a good standard.
The inn is really nicely decorated and very welcoming.
The only gripe I have ,and this applies to 90% of gastopubs . We are asked to pay a premium if we want to order cheese & biscuits, and invariably one is disappointed when the plate arrives with a really small amount of cheese , in fact barely 2oz which is only a sample. As I said earlier this whinge applies to the vast majority of restaurants and I am not singling out the Portway.
This is a lovely place and I heartily recommend it , but, don't order the cheese

As a party of 4, we were looking for good accomodation in the 'Black & White' area of Herefordshire. The Portway Inn at Stauntin-on-Wye is an excellent place, & although it is just outside the area, the distance is only a few miles. However, the choice was really worthwhile as this is a lovely country inn in a quiet location, with good food, excellent staff & accomodation of the highest standards. I would be happy to recommend the Portway to anybody & shall certainly use it again when we are in the area. It certainly deserves all the 'excellent reviews' that I seen.

Room Tip: We stopped in the main building, our friends in the annex & both rooms were superb, so it doesn...

This is how a country inn should be. A warm friendly welcome; a very comfortable, clean room in their barn conversion which is full of character; a steak dinner par excellence; a bar full of locals who do make you feel welcome and one of the best breakfasts ever. Two nights there was not enough and we will be back.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the main road are quieter and if you're tall mind your head on the exposed beams...

Booked an overnight stop here for easy access to Hay-on-Wye and Black Mountains. Traditional style coaching inn with plenty of period character. Plenty of on-site parking.
Room was ok; bathroom a bit tired, and mattress slightly soft (for my taste) but all was clean.
My room was at the front, and road noise is a problem if you want the window open; if closed, then no noise can be heard.
Breakfast is very good; fresh, local and wholesome with a good variety of foods.

Room Tip: If you have a choice, take a room at the rear of the property.

Booked to stay at Portway inn 3rd to 5th May, £118 for 2nights in superior double room through Booking.com. Arrived & were met warmly by a pleasant member of staff & shown to our room in the barn conversion, the room was lovely, very good size & spotlessly clean. Went down to the bar for a few drinks (happy hour 5-6 ) ordered food, fri night is steak night, i had fillet & hubby had rib eye both were excellent & onion rings to die for!! Breakfast was really lovely & really nice lady taking your order, very friendly & made you feel welcome as did the girls in the bar & happy to answer any questions you may have. The inn is spotless & as said in previous review a good mix of trad/mod decor, my only gripe would be that slightly lacking in atmosphere, maybe a bit of background music in bar?? overall we had a lovely stay, would i go back? Definately!

Room Tip: Room in barn conversion quiet & nice views

Easy to park, clean and tidy-looking building with fine traditional/modern mix of decor and comfortable accommodation, the menu was good and the quality of the food excellent.
The staff were efficient and helpful with a friendly tone throughout. A pleasure overall.
