This Inn continues to improve .The warm welcoming atmosphere with log fire, friendly staff/owner set the scene for a pleasant lunch. The menu offered a varied choice but an offer of Cod & Chips for 2@ £11 was too good to miss. When the food arrived, having been freshly cooked,it was well presented with salad in addition to the mushy peas asked for along with a small pot of Tartare Sauce. We both had a soft drink and followed with Cherry Creme Caramel and Apple Crumble with custard respectively.
Total cost was £22.0.Excellent

Having visited earlier in the year I was pleased to discover that the Portway has got even better. Had a great meal with my family. Served by incredibly friendly and helpful staff, although clearly new. We all enjoyed our dinner and whilst there was little room for desert we couldn't help ourselves! If I have one gripe it was a fairly meanly portioned goats cheese tart. Surprisingly good wine list too. Would definitely recommend this restaurant! The building is lovely, and the bathrooms we're immaculate.

Passed this place many times and it always looked busy. The bar and restaurant is very well furnished and the staff were very helpful. Food was well presented but the quality of food was disgusting. The salad had been tossed in extra virgin oil and the chips had an awful taste (like old fat). When i passed the kitchen to go the toilet the smell was all around the place and the smell of air freshner from the toilets was too over powering. I don't know if i would visit this place again.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your meal. We do use extra virgin olive oil in our salad dressings but we are, of course, very happy to serve salads without a dressing if customers prefer. regarding the chips we serve, they are hand cut and triple-cooked in oil that is regularly changed. Many customers come back specifically for our chips and there have been no interruptions to their normal quality recently.

This is our new local so did not stay overnight. The decor of the bars and restaurant is really well done. Light, well furnished and pleasant modern colours yet retaining a traditional pub atmosphere. The rooms ,I am told are fantastic and I can well believe it.
The bar has a wide range of beers and ciders , the Wye valley bitter was superb.
Only one waitress on when we were there and she also looked after the bar, very efficient and pleasant .
The food menu was fairly limited, too many meat dishes and only one fish dish. The "specials" board had an extra fish dish and a vegetarian one also.
The food was well presented and of good quality but there was something missing. Both my wife and myself came to the same conclusion , you just couldn't describe it as tasty, yummy or delicious it was, sorry to say, just bland . If it had been tasty it would have justified the £12.95 each dish cost. I had Tuna steak and my wife had Stuffed chicken breast both from the specials board.
We will visit again as we live just round the corner and I hope I'll have a better food report to give.

My wife and i booked a two night stay in October as a base for going to Cardiff for the Rugby League World Cup and we couldnt have wished for a better place to stay ...
All the staff were very friendly and helpful , especially Vickie who looked after us so well from the moment we checked in , nothing was too much hassle ..
The bar is very welcoming and cosy , and the food at The Portway is fantastic , both for evening meals and the wonderful cooked breakfast ...
We booked a superior room in the barn conversion annex out of the back of the pub and for the little bit extra it costs , its well worth it .... the room was very comfortable , quiet , and huge , it was like three rooms rolled into one ..... The beams in the room add a lot of character .
We would highly recommend to ANYONE looking for somewhere to stay near Herford to go and stay at the Portway , you wont be dissapointed ...
One word of caution , dont follow the signs off the main road for Staunton on wye , you'll end up on some tiny country roads , stay on the main road and you cant miss it ....
Thanks again to all the staff at The Portway for making us feel so welcome
Rob n Caz

Room Tip: book a superior room , they are well worth the extra few quid ...

The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.
The food was to an excellent standard and breakfast, well we were spoilt for choice.
Our room had an excellent view.

Room Tip: There were no lifts.
