“Great value and very comfortable stay”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

The room was really big, comfortable and clean. The age of the building (a proper old inn, looks great) means the room had real character (including a very slight slope in one part, which was quirky!). Although just off the main road, there was absolutely no noise and we slept well. The pub itself was fine for a coupe of drinks (we didn't eat there in the evening but the breakfast was very good). We booked on the day of arrival and got a brilliant deal too, half the price of many similar places in the area.

A lovely old inn with modern extension, where the bedrooms are located. The rooms are tastefully decorated with everything that one could wish for provided. The staff including the manager, the bedroom staff, the restaurant and bar staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The food, especially the breakfast is good.
The inn is well situated for visiting Hereford, Hay on Wye and the northern edge of the Black Mountains

Room Tip: Back rooms are probably the quietest

What really makes this place so wonderful is the staff, they really know about customer service and go out of their way to ensure you have a great stay.

We had a little issue with one of the meals, probably down to personal taste, but the manager promptly exchanged without a fuss.

The waitress at breakfast coped admirably on her own during a busy shift, even sparing time to smile, chat and then help us check out!

Breakfast was the best ever, lovely, fresh local produce.

Other points;
Dusty light shade (everywhere else seemed very clean)
TV remote not working, probably just needed batteries, but I'm sure they would have replaced if we'd asked.
Locally sourced meat and produce
Friendly and attentive staff.
Good selection local beers and ciders
Recently refurbished (carpets, shower room etc)
Overall, v good value
Small TV, could hardly see from bed
Room v hot, no sheets, just duvet, no fan?
Lovely rustic charm, locals and tourists in bar.
Residents Lounge open 24 hours
Board games
Toiletries and towels good
Very nice, large garden
Nice rustic feel in pub bar - mixture of locals and tourists
Wifi was slow and sporadic in our room (room 7)

We have just returned from a one night stay here, all in all my family had 6 rooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our short time here. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, we ate in the restaurant Saturday night and again for breakfast Sunday morning. All the rooms were clean and comfortable.
After reading some of the reviews on here about the portway inn I was a little worried but I had nothing to worry about and would recommend this place to anyone, the reviews do not do it justice, and think that they are a little harsh, what do they expect?
Well done portway inn we will definitely be returning and thank you

Room Tip: Family room number 10 is lovely, superior room number 12 is huge

I stopped at the Portway Hotel on Business as I was working the next day in Hereford which is about 5 to 10 minutes drive away. I found it to be a nice comfortable, clean, friendly and welcoming place to stay, but found the room was starting to show signs of age and could do with a little refurbishing in places. However the overall stay was good and I highly recommend the food which was excellent.

the hotel was ok though a little tired looking.the reception on arrival was friendly and welcoming and the staff were all helpful.
over all the hotel was a little tired but the evening meal we had was good and hot.
our room no'4 was ok and the ensuite very clean and fresh.no complaints.
we had two singles which were very comfortable but we could have put them together though for one night it didn't seem worth it.
if you have national trust membership as we do you must visit 'the wier' just a few miles away.a beautiful quiet location for pick nicking and enjoying the views up and down the wye river.

Room Tip: had room 4.it was ok but had 2 singles.we could have moved them together but it was not worth it for...
