Recently my wife and I spent almost six weeks traveling across the United States and Canada. We let our car, a heritage English roadster --- a '68 Morgan --- set the tone of our trip. It felt most comfortable stopping at Bed and Breakfasts in fine, heritage homes.
One of the nicest B&Bs we stayed in was The Doctor's House in Tara, Ontario. The old Victorian home was built more than a century ago when Tara was a booming little place and not a bedroom community for Owen Sound. Despite years of history, the elegant old home still has its charm intact. Just check out the amazing window trim. To create the thick, ornate window molding required numerous decorative pieces of wood trim. You don't see this being done in homes today.
The couple running The Doctor's House, John and Miriam, made us feel like guests in their home. They are putting a lot of effort into ensuring this is a successful, village B&B. Everything, including the breakfast, was done with care and delivered with style.
Our breakfast, made with fresh local fruit, was heart healthy and prepared with me in mind. You see, I have been battling some heart issues and John and Miriam took that into account when making our breakfast. Nice.
One thing that caught our eye was the old school house motif flowing gently through the place. This is most evident in stuff like two old school desks but it carries over to the entrance. The slate floor in the entry is made from pieces of blackboard recovered from an old school before its demolition. When we learned that John and Miriam had previously owned and remodeled a single room schoolhouse, we understood.
Tara is centrally located, close to Owen Sound, the Bruce Peninsula and even Port Elgin. We took the Chi-Cheemaun from Manitoulin to Tobermory, stopped in Wiarton for dinner, and then drove the short distance to Tara for the night.
