“Decent Hotel - Avoid the 2nd Floor”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

I have stayed at the Hotel Arctic on several occassions. It's an average hotel, but quite good for Northern Canada. The staff are friendly and informative. They know their way around Iqaluit and are effusive with their recommendations and advice; they also let you leave your bags with them if your checkout is before your flight. The rooms are a decent size too. If you stay here, aim for a room overlooking the assembly and the town. The view is solid. I recommend avoiding the second floor though; loud patrons in the hallway late at night can wake you up continuously.

If you're hungry, check out the Kickin' Caribou. The vending machines are not always stocked.

Room Tip: Avoid the second floor

Stayed for four nights here in Iqaluit. Service is excellent and staff is more than helpful. Rooms are very clean and comfortable - a little hot since there is no air conditioning - this is the arctic after all - but the sun sure heated up the room but with open windows and doors things cool down fast. This must hardly be a problem the other eleven months of the year - we were here in July - had glorious sunny days - including the 2.30 am sunrise ! Lots of fun - great place to meet locals at the bar and beer prices the same as in Montreal !

You really never know what you're going to get in the north. Service and reliability seems to change with the wind, and I haven't had two equal stays here. The property itself is clean and comfortable. I agree that the amenities and towels aren't great, and customer service is alright.

The Hotel Arctic is a bit of a mixed bag. I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the room; mine was large, bright (east facing), clean, comfortable and generally well equipped. One suggestion would be that the hotel invest in some better quality bath towels; the ones provided were not full size and of pretty low quality. I was unfortunate enough to be given a second floor room above the bar, and while I was not kept awake I was lulled to sleep most nights by the bar’s sound system, and the live Friday night band was loud enough that I could identify the songs. The bar and restaurant are under separate management from the hotel and guests should avoid these rooms if noise bothers you.

The biggest issue I have with the Arctic has to do with the glowingly advertised ‘Fitness Centre’. As a pretty dedicated runner, and visiting a northern city during late winter, I was keen to not miss my daily fix so planned on using one of the hotel’s treadmills. As advertised on the hotels web site ‘we believe being on the road does not mean having to skip your daily workout’. In reality, ‘treadmills’ should be listed on the web site as singular not plural as there is only one; and, more importantly during my entire stay it was not working. I mentioned it at reception hoping a quick fix might be possible only to be told, with a conspiratorial smile as if to rub it in, “Oh yes, it’s been that way for a while”. Fail!

Room Tip: Advoid the rooms above the bar.

Gone are the days of very basic accommodation in Iqaluit. Hotels are slowly reaching southern standards. The old Nova is now the Hotel Arctic. Good hotel with decent resto. Wifi is intermittent and slow. I usually buy a plan with Meshnet which gives coverage beyond the hotel and is consistent and a bit faster.

Just had a stay at the Arctic hotel. Nice room, quiet, clean, well appointed with a microwave, mini-fridge, dishes, toaster and kettle.
The staff was welcoming and supplied us with everything we needed. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: We had a suite - with two large beds and a pull out sofa.

I had the pleasure of staying several nights at this hotel with a large group. It is located directly across from the Legislative Assembly, in the heart of downtown Iqaluit. The restaurant is quite good and reasonably priced (for the north) and the pub in the hotel is lively and well attended every evening by a raucous but harmless local crowd.
Artists from the area and Cape Dorset roam through the public areas and good deals on Inuit art can be had for those with a knack for negotiation. Previous experience in a middle eastern souk will come in handy here, for sure.
The rooms are large and come equipped with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a small set of dishes. This small amenity can save you tons of money over a few days since restaurant prices in Iqaluit can make your head spin. The rooms themselves are comfortable, quiet, and large enough for even claustrophobic guests. Laundry facilities at a sister hotel can be made available if your stay outlasts your clean sock supply.
I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Many members of our group have found that the best rooms were on the 3rd floor, and my personal expe...
