When they say wilderness thats just what you get .You have to drive down a 8K dusty but not terrible gravel road, you seem to go forever then you start to see Loris welcome signes along the road telling you how far you are along. When you drive into the driveway it opens up to an amazing panoramic view of the open west coast ocean. They have over a mile of coastline that they own and miles and miles after that to hike and beachcomb. They offer open beachfront ,secluded beach that are sites with a bit of bush between your site and the beach to cut the wind if it comes up,or private sites farther off into the bush. The managers,Lori and Curtis are great .If Curtis isnt running around fixing something a camper needs he is tending to the grounds and making sure the showers are nice and hot.Lori ( the campground lady ) as we call her runs the office and greets every camper with a huge welcoming smile. We have been to others camps in the aera and didnt realize just how small the sites were until we found Mussel Beach, there is enough space in between sites so that you dont feel as that you are sharing a site with your neighbour. You can often sit and watch Whales, seals, otters and eagles right at your doorstep, not to mention the odd bear sighting. Its camping at its best and we will be going back for sure

My dad and I stumbled across this campsite by accident. My dad hadn't been to the West Island area in almost 30 years and it was a first time for me in the area.. We had been looking for a campsite since we got to Port Alberni ( We were travelling from Victoria, my place of residence) and couldn't find anything. We looked at a couple sites in Ucluelet to no avail, so we back tracked to the Mussel Beach sign. It is about 15 clicks off the main road on a pretty decent gravel road. We said to each other "it's either a sick joke or a gem" and It definitely was the latter. We drove in to a site that had a mile of oceanfront campsites, and that was very clean. They aren't kidding when they say it is a wilderness camp. It doesn't have running water but there is a shower house with hot water, and 2 clean outhouses. The rest is up to you! We selected a site near the office and steps away from the Barkley Sound. Honestly one of the most beautiful camping sites I have ever seen! There was one point where myself and my dad were watching whales in the sound.. was pretty cool!

As for the hosts (Curtis and Lori) they were very helpful and fantastic. They were always around if you needed anything, and the shape of the campsite was an indicator of that. They warned us of bears in the area, so you will need to burn or take your garbage with you, and not leave your food out! But hey, its the wilderness right? All and all the money you pay for the product your receiving is more than worth it! And I can't wait to go back again!

Showed up with a broken tent trailer and the owner[Curtis] brought tools and supplies down, spend a few hours fixing up trailer so it was better than new.No charge, what amazing service and cant say enough about the hospitality.Very upkept and clean campsites, this was our best camping trip ever,we booked for next year because the kids had a great time.Saw some whales surface right in front of our campsite.Quiet place,5 out of 5,would give it 6 out of 5 if I could.Very nice people running place.

This hidden gem is something I stumbled on by accident. I had booked 2 nights at the Bella Pacifica Campground with a very rude receptionist who rushed me through booking a campsite 6 rows from the ocean and was not willing to answer my questions. So because customer service is important to me I began looking elsewhere and stumbled upon this. I called and the lady I spoke to was amazing. She answered all my questions picked out an amazing oceanfront site for us because we have young children. I was a bit nervous because it is wilderness camping and we have young children. They do not have running water/power or garbage cans. You either burn your garbage or take it home with you, they do have pit toilets as well. The road in took us about 30 minutes because it is on a forestry road. But once we got there it was well worth the drive. We had a TRUE oceanfront campsite!!! It was site #7 and has a driftwood shack on the campsite with your fire pit underneath it and a picnic table under neath as well for when it rains. Our kids played all day on the driftwood beach right in front of our campground, our daughters favorite part was hunting for seashells all day! We didn't have any bear/wildlife sitings but you do need to be very cautious about leaving food/toiletries out for this reason. They sell firewood for $10 per wheelbarrow full. We really did love this place as it gave us a very different experience from a lot of the other campsites we stayed at on our trip. Definitely recommend to all looking to sleep right by the ocean. Enjoy!
