We stayed in the Porthole cabin for 4 nights in late March and it is my new favourite place to stay in the Tofino/Uculet area. We misjudged our driving time and arrived hours early. Pennee said she had just finished cleaning the cottage and we were welcome to move in. She is a gracious host who obviously takes great pride in the cabins. Our cabin was beautiful, cozy and very romantic and I noticed many small touches such as candles to light, lots of clean towels, generous coffee/tea supplies and other amenities that were greatly appreciated. The cabin itself is beautifully designed and decorated for a fun relaxed coastal feel. The hot water on demand accommodated two in the double shower easily and the BBQ was great to use. The hot tub is perfectly maintained and always ready to use. The bed in the loft was very comfy with quality linens. I also loved the little crabs and shells lacquered into the plank flooring! The views from the large ocean facing windows are fantastic and there are several places for relaxing with morning coffee. The cooking/eating gear is well thought out for making meals. I think we made our best yet Scottish breakfast there!
We have stayed at various places in the area over the years including a very posh and expensive stay at a B&B and a night at the Wikaninnish Inn but I think these cabins better capture the fun and relaxing atmosphere I seek out and at a very reasonable price!
I have found that March is a great time to visit the area. Your cabin is at a reduced rate, it is perfect hiking temperature, surfing waves are great, and the Cove Hot Springs aren't insanely busy. Bring a raincoat, rain pants (Co-op in Uculet sells good ones at good price), comfortable rubber boots and a cap and you are set for any adventure here!
