“Another great visit”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

We recently stayed for a second time at Away in the County. Again, it was perfect. As hosts, Susan and Glenn will stop at nothing to ensure that your stay is just as you would wish. A great restaurant either fancy or cheap? They know one. A quirky place to visit? They have a great recommendation. An up and coming winery? They've been there. Of course, the b&b itself is spotlessly clean and impeccably decorated. It's a great place to hang out. There's a nice stroll to the lake and the sunset is well worth coming "home" for. If you have purchased food and drink during the day, there is a shared fridge to keep it fresh and cool or you can eat in the screened in porch or on the balcony (while watching the sunset). And speaking of food, the breakfasts are memorable. They always start with Glenn's muffins, still warm from the oven, and are followed by your choice of either a savoury main (often with eggs from Susan and Glenn's chickens) or a sweet main. It's hard to say no to seconds. And it is impossible for us to contemplate staying anywhere else in Prince Edward County.

My wife and I spent two nights at AWAY in the County, trying to get away! From the moment that we arrived to the moment we departed (armed with that mornings freshly baked muffins), we were treated like royalty. Nothing was too much trouble, restaurant reservations, suggestions of places to visit and superb breakfast (this is no regular breakfast, its homemade, fresh, good quality local ingredients. A choice is given each morning between a sweet and a savoury option, and they will accommodate dietary issues. All hand cooked by Glen.

We stayed in the 'Artists Room' which is a large room, light and airy and has a superb shower and separate bath. It is decorated with a selection of Susan's art work, antiques and local art. Everything that we could have wanted or needed was provided (or was available, we were looking for an Iron and Susan lent us hers...) including a picnic set, beach towels, tea & coffee and even a park pass to the Sandbanks Park.

Susan and Glen go out of their way to make your stay special, on our last morning two of the couples were celebrating anniversaries and they brought sparkling wine to breakfast to celebrate.

AWAY is a beautiful secluded hidden gem which we will be sure to return to.

Our only comment is that if you like to keep to yourselves, breakfast might not be for you as it is served at a single table, however we are sure that if you wanted to eat separately it would be possible... Although with only three rooms, the table is not crowded.

A few notes:

- They only accept Credit or Cash (Debit isn't available)
- Whilst Oscar (their dog) is around, we never saw him upstairs, so don't let dogs put you off
- One of the rooms is separate from the other two, so would be very quiet

Room Tip: Artists Room is large with a Bath and a Shower.

My husband and I just spent the long weekend in Prince Edward County at this lovely B&B. the property is quiet, the view exceptional, and the attention to detail incredible. Susan and Glenn are wonderful hosts who clearly go to a lot of trouble to make everyone's stay special. As mentioned in previous reviews, Susan is a very talented artist whose work is exhibited throughout their lovely home, and Glenn makes a wonderful breakfast that even includes freshly laid eggs from the friendly chickens they keep on the property! You cannot go wrong in staying here. The house is well located for exploring the area, and Susan and Glenn have lots of great suggestions for places to visit and places to dine. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Thanks Susan and Glenn for a lovely time! -- Sarah and Jason.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Artist's room, and it was lovely, but all rooms looked great on the website.

A recent stay at 'AWAY in the County' provided my husband and I with a lovely respite from the realities of life. Oscar's (the basset hound's) greeting as we arrived set the tone for our visit, friendly, calming, and charming. Our room 'The Artist's Room' was whimsical, designed with our total comfort in mind. From the wine glasses, to the fresh flowers, to the hand written note from our host welcoming us, our visit with Susan and Glen was perfect. They have 'thought of everything' that might make our stay flawless. The screened-in-porch was tranquil in the morning and and the breakfast was delicious. (Probably the best rhubarb apple muffins we have ever had), you could taste the freshness of the rhubarb cut from their garden that morning! On another note, Susan recommended 'Blumen' for dinner and it too was perfect. Even though our visit was short, it felt like we had been week away for a week!

What a lovely and inspiring space Susan and Glen (and Oscar of course!) have created! Susan is a remarkable artist, where her lovely work is sprinkled on some of the walls of their hamlet. We spent a few days of heaven at this wonderful B&B. We were served amazing home made breakfasts, given lots of wonderful travel advice, and equipped with wine tasting vouchers, maps, and a Sandbanks Provincial Park pass. Our room was a picture from a magazine. We spent an evening walking the grounds trail overlooking the water equipped with our picnic basket that includes a variety of items for travel outdoors. We will be visiting again! What an amazing 1 year anniversary we had! Thank you Susan and Glen and Oscar for the great memories!

Thank you for the lovely review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and our happy you took the time to explore our property. Although we work hard on our vegetable and flower gardens it is the natural parts of our property, down by the water that we enjoy the most and love to share with our guests. We are pleased you enjoyed your 1st anniversary time with us and we look forward to having back again one day to celebrate another. All the best, Susan and Glen

Wow !!! I can't stop saying WOW! What an awesome weekend with our B&B hosts Susan and Glen. From the time of check- in to check out their hospitality was A1. We checked in late and Susan was able to reserve a table at a local bistro. She was always available for advice from dining to local wineries. The rooms are impeccable . We stayed in the carpenters room and had a view of the lake , rooms were well stocked, beds comfortable , breakfast fantastic. We will definitely be back.

Susan and Glen are those unique people that you just gravitate to. Their creativity and presence makes you feel right at home and you won't want to leave!

We spent the days right after our wedding at AWAY and we could not have chosen a better place, the setting is stunning, the accommodation truly grounding and the ambiance with the hens and loveable Oscar... perfect.

This place is a gem, you won't go wrong booking a stay and make sure to book WELL in advance as there is a two day minimum and because of its perfect chemistry and few rooms it is in high demand.

Enjoy!

Michael & Cindy

p.s. thanks again Susan, Glen and Oscar for your warmth and hospitality.
