The place is very old, the floors slope and the windows are held open with window sticks but the Inn is spotless and the staff are wonderful. It is like taking a step back in time.
The food was so good the first night we decided to eat in all 3 nights and we weren't disappointed.

I stayed at the Marathon Inn for a Road Scholar programme and thoroughly enjoyed its shabby chic style. Stalff are friendly and helpful and the food was great. They provide a complete gluten free menu if needed including bag lunches which is a real plus.

When our Elderhostel trip was cancelled, I made reservations to replicate the trip on our own. Liz was very accommodating and gave us a wonderful room at the front of the inn (main house). Like most 100+ year old homes, there are spots that are a little worn around the edges, but the bed was very comfy, the bathroom was large, and the entire place was immaculate. Staff were very helpful and gave us good recommendations for dining out. Jim (part owner/chef) had taken a couple of days off since the Elderhostel group wasn't coming. We did enjoy one excellent meal there during our stay. This was a great place to stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to repeat the experience if/when we return to Grand Manan.

My husband and I stayed at the Marathon Inn as the base for an Elderhostel Birding and Whale Watching tour. The Inn had a kind of "down-at-heels" charm--somewhat run down but certainly clean and comfortable enough. Every room was different and there were great differences in size of rooms, baths, etc. We were there during an unusual heat wave and there was no A/C nor even a window fan, so nights were somewhat uncomfortable; but most of the time, I believe, nights are much cooler than we experienced and one wouldn't need any kind of cooling devices. The food at the Marathon was excellent, however. Jim, the owner, is also the chef (and also led some birding outings). He is one of the world's great raconteurs and a natural stand-up comic. Breakfasts were hearty and made to order and included such things as fresh wild blueberry pancakes; dinners had a daily choice of meat or seafood. The fish, scallops, and on the last night--lobster--were VERY fresh and simply prepared to bring out their flavors. The Inn had a long old-fashioned veranda with a view of the sea--a pleasant place to sit and chat, read and enjoy the view. There were also a solar-heated swimming pool and pleasant grounds.
