“Combination HI hostel and regular hotel”
Reviewed 18 December 2013

I stayed in a private hostel room which was vintage. The second floor bedroom had a window overlooking the harbor, adjoining private bath with an old fashioned deep bathtub with a hose to rinse off. Plenty of hot water, another window overlooking the field in back. The legs of my bed, because of sagging floors, were propped up to make it even. The room was clean enough, had thick towels, toiletries. The room had old fashioned character. Wonderful salty fresh air coming through the windows.

The staff, lobby and dining rooms were pleasant. The porch of the hotel which runs along the front was sagging but had comfortable adirondack chairs. The 1871 building was worn by weather, on a hill overlooking the harbor. You could purchase dinner or breakfast. Plain home cooking. A Road Scholar group was staying there studying birds. They booked all the dorm room beds. Other guests were staying in the regular hotel rooms.

I loved visiting Grand Manan and would stay at the hostel again. This island is easily reached by a reasonably priced ferry which has a good cafeteria. It is a windswept island with high bluffs, interesting geography and history. Nice atmosphere to totally relax. I loved being there.

This hotel is unique and is not really in a great state of repair but that's what gives it its character and charm. If you are looking for luxury you won't find it here but you will find a warm welcome and a lovely atmosphere.
The breakfast was excellent and Jim the owner was absolutely charming and went out of his way to make us welcome and enjoy our stay.
If you visit make sure you drive to the sunset viewing point at the end of Whistlers road to watch the sunset with locals who are so friendly and make you feel so welcome.

Thinking the "annex" might be a newer addition I booked a room for one night. The building itself is very old an in disrepair with a mix of 1800's and 1970's furniture. The floor is so slopped that a glass slid completely off a dresser and smashed on the floor. I love old but I actually felt bad the place was in such bad shape.Lawn mowing begins at 8am (Atlantic) that's 7am (eastern) so don't plan on sleeping. The hotel boasts free calls in North America but has no phones in the rooms! The common kitchen had molded food in the refrigerator that I cleaned out. I didn't find the staff particularly friendly and they were very disorganized.

Room Tip: Grand Manan is wonderful. You will be happy no matter where you stay.........so go!

When we went in the 1990's we made some great friends and had a super time, the food was first class, but like many have said if you want fancy rooms and even floors then go elsewhere. However, if you want a nostalgic feel and character, I'd highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Pick a room away from the bar.

I'll start off by saying this hotel transports you back in time, and that's what i was looking for. I went to GMI to do some family history research, so this was my cup of tea. If you are looking for luxury, stop now and look elsewhere.
As you pull up to the island on the ferry, you can see the hotel in the distance. It is not a pretty hotel, dare i even call it " creepy" looking. There is a parkinglot off to the right, hotel on the left and outdoor pool straight ahead. There are tennis courts but judging by their condition, they haven't been used for quite some time. The lady was nice when we checked, told us about the hotel dinner and breakfast. We had breakfast only, it was fine. I was travelling with two other adults and one child. Our room had two bedrooms and one bath. One room had a double bed and because the floor slanted, the person sleeping nearest to the wall pretty much kept rolling into the wall. The veranda and bedroom floor were slanted and the house makes lots of creeking sounds at night, a bit annoying when trying to sleep. I found the hallways and common rooms to be filled with lots of interesting pictures and books. i pulled a book (i think it was Black Beauty) and it was dated on the inside 1911. There are tons more with handwtitten dates and names. Pretty cool if you ask me. Two of used the pool. No complaints there.

We stayed 2nights at the Inn. The rooms are clean but the whole place needs some major leveling. There is practically no sound proofing between rooms and the stairs and floors are very noisy. If you are a light sleeper, I would skip this one. That said, the staff is very friend and helpful. The food was very good, but the dinner service was rushed. If you want a leisurely dinner, be sure to ask if that is possible. We stayed at the same time as an Elderhostel group so that may have been the reason for the rush.

Stayed here two nights on a birdwatching trip. My room was basic with double bed and separate bathroom. The room smelled a bit musty so I kept the windows open. This is a very old property and has lots of character. There probably isn't an even floor in the building. Enjoyed the family room in the evenings and large wrap around porch. The food was very good. The linoleum in my bathroom was curled up from previous shower leaks. There was no coffeemaker in the room and coffee was supposed to be available at 6:30am. Our birding group waited until 6:40am before we had to leave. Still no coffee. So that is my only complaint. It would be nice to have coffee available in the hall by the dining area so guests could have when desired.
