“Did not meet expectations”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

Having stayed at this resort a few years prior, I returned again. The location is scenic, and the beds are comfortable, but... the food quality was much lower than expected, and dining options are limited. If you are looking for a gourmet experience with healthy eating options, this is not it. Be warned, there are no other food options on South Pender (although the North Island has a few).

Also, if you are looking for a romantic experience, I would recommend booking a villa with private hot tub, as the single main hot tub can get very crowded with family groups; and expect to be covered in pine needles and bits when you step out - perhaps the filters are broken. I recommend that any activities (e.g. kayak rental) be booked well in advance, as the kiosk is not always open.

There has been a change in management at this resort (after it closed down for the winter), and though the new owner is aware of these and other issues, it may take a while before everything returns to the level of luxury you would expect for this hotel. The prices currently do not reflect the value.

Room Tip: If you request a room on the top (third) floor of the lodge, there will be nobody above you, and you...

Thank you for your constructive comments, we have recently re-opened the resort on the 10th of April and we are making every effort in a short time to achieve a level of service that this wonderful destination deserves.

Sounds like the new owners will be micromanaging our favorite resort/marina.

Our family and friends have been going to Poets since they opened. We have always enjoyed the activities available for the children as well as the adults.

One of our favorite adult activities has been the steam cave and hot tub located outside of the Spa. Back in the day it was $10 per adult, then $15 and last year up to $20 per person. A fellow boater told me the other day the new owners had raised the rate to $25 per person. I just called Poets and they confirmed this is the new price. I'm sorry but $50 plus tax for a couple to have a steam? The poets employee also disclosed to me that there will no longer be marina staff to assist with docking, pumping gas or transport guests to and from the brake-water. Apparently if you need gas or transport you will have to call the front desk and they will send down the maintenance man. I can only imagine how long that would take lol.

In order to check in and out of the marina you will now be required to deal with the front desk of the hotel. Anyone that is familiar with the lay out of this resort would agree this does not make any sense.

Good luck to the boater with a single engine trying to dock on his own during one of our common windy days.

We are off to Roche Harbor this weekend where they really know how to treat a guest. The marina staff at Roche is second to none.

I hope to see the marina staff back at Poets ASAP.

Hello James,

Thank you for your feedback on the pricing of the steam cave. This $25 rate change was actually implemented last year under previous ownership and we will certainly look into it right away to find out the reasoning behind the increase.

We also want to let you know that there will most certainly be assistance in the marina although our check-ins will be centralized in the main lodge. As of last weekend we have staff in the marina assisting with docking, fuel and anything else that arises! You'll probably even remember a few of them from last year's visits.

I'm not sure if you've been to the resort yet this season to see the staff for yourself but we hope to have you back for a visit to see how things are running!

Thanks for all of your constructive comments!

We traded into the Poet's Cove at a cottage through the Registry Collection. Originally, we did it because our friends were coming with us and had a dog they didn't want to leave at home. This was the only resort we could find that had accommodations for pets. So we booked it for the second week in December. Our friends cancelled, but our reservation stood, and we have a dog too, so we decided to stick with it. About a month before we were going to leave, they called and said the resort itself and all of its facilities would be closed, but we could still come to the cottage if we wanted to. We said heck yes!

The resort is actually closed for the winter and we are the only ones here, but that suits us just fine. We have our lab and there are incredibly friendly people in the office and on the grounds, Kathy and Orlando and Kelly. We speak with them about once a day about something or other, but mostly, we just hang out in our cottage or drive around the island.

The cottages are WONDERFUL. Fully equipped with what you might need, except we brought some basics like salt, pepper, sugar, oil, stuff like that. The kitchen has granite countertops, there is a washer/dryer, a spacious dining room, a couch that seats three and two comfortable chairs in the living area. A great hot tub (not very private at all, but this year, who cares!) A wonderful gas fireplace! We've lived by the fireplace, knitting, reading, playing cribbage. We rarely even get a shower before noon, I am ashamed to say. We haven't had the TV on even once. Which is rare for us but now seems intrusive. We've made many meals at our cottage, but have also really enjoyed the pub near Browning Bay and the Hope Cafe is AMAZING. We've loved exploring the galleries. The grocery facilities are way beyond our expectations on this island. We kind of expected a Speedy Mart, but there is a very well stocked grocery with lovely produce, a bakery where you can special order lunch or breads, a great bookstore, a hardware store, a very friendly pharmacy, a sushi place which we will try soon, a ladies dress shop and a pet/home store 7 miles away.

We've done lots of nice walking around the resort - there are good trails very nearby, and every day, we walk down to the marina and look around. It's odd that there is no one else here, but actually, we are loving it! I'm so sorry that they found it financially better to close the whole resort for the winter, but hey, it's a business and they have to do what works to make the resort viable.

The grounds are so well kept, I want to bring this groundskeeper to my house. Natural but very tidy. Nice combination. Flawless, even at this time of the year. The cottages and villas are beautiful to look at as is the resort. The lighting is perfect, and everything being on a hill, allows such views of the bay!

I have nothing whatsoever to say about the service here, though it seems to be consistently the biggest complaint. Hope the owners/managers read all of that and improve in 2014 because this is really a very special place. We will come back in spring for sure. Summer and lots of kids and noise is not our forte, but will be also come back in September which I've heard is the best and most well kept secret around.

There is just something about this place that has gotten under my skin. I'll bet I'm not alone.

Room Tip: I don't know about the hotel rooms. We were in cottage 11, but if I had a choice, I would be fa...

Thank you so much for the kind words in your review! I think that you really hit a great point with your comments about the time of year to visit the resort. In the slower season it can be a little quiet around here but it leaves lots of time for relaxation without the crowds of the summer. If you like exploring and meeting the locals then the spring, fall or winter are great option for a trip to Pender Island.

Thank you for making the trip out to the island, it's been a pleasure to have you!

We were docked at the local marina and went to the bar in this resort. The staff were very friendly, there was a roaring fire and we were made very welcome. The first night was rather rowdy due to some young drunks enjoying Canadian Thanksgiving, the second evening much quieter and more enjoyable.

We thought the prices a little high.

We tried to book in but the hotel was fully booked.

Spent a night at Poet's Cove earlier this month while visiting our beautiful daughter on Pender Island. It was our second experience at the resort. I'm not sure why I didn't review last year so I committed to doing so this year. We love this place. The surroundings are some of the most beautiful in the world. The service is excellent. The staff is wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. Last year we stayed in the main building. So comfortable with an amazing view. This year we stayed in a two bedroom cottage... Very luxe and also very comfortable. We dined in the restaurant. Excellent food. Excellent service. It's not cheap at the Cove but it is worth every penny. There was no downside for us. We loved it. And if the beautiful daughter weren't leaving the area we would be returning every year.

Room Tip: Every room has a view. You really can't go wrong!!

Our party of 6 spent 2 nights here. Very nice marina and good location to clear Canadian Customs and Immigration by boat. Terrific hotel staff. Very nice rooms. Four of us were in a cottage, which was great. We rented the hotels van for an hour and had our own cookout at the cottage. The cottage was well equiped.
The activities center on spa, pool, bikes, kayaking etc. The is no real town or village. The girls went to the spa for the day and the guys went fishing. Perfect!

Room Tip: Cottages are great for a party of 4
