Heriot Bay Inn
Reviewed 7 August 2007

My partner and I recently stayed at the Heriot Bay Inn on Quadra Island, B.C. and although we had booked for 2 nights we left after only 1. The whole experience was so bad we actually left the island before attending the wedding we were to go to and in fact will never return to the island.

The following is a copy of the letter I sent to the manager and also the owner of the inn to explain my experience.

My partner and I recently stayed at the Heriot Bay Inn and the experience we had was unpleasant to say the least.

Our problems began as soon as we walked in the door. I have MS and being confronted with a flight of stairs in order to get to the room was certainly an unexpected challenge. Once we managed to get our belongings and me to the room were appalled at the ridiculously small size and lack of a television. The room was so small we had to leave some of our belongings outside. This was definitely not the first class accommodations we were expecting from looking at your website.

We had what you call a veranda room so we thought we could have the dog spend some time out there, unfortunately there was a whole section of the railing missing slats. This allowed our dog access to the roof beyond, which she walked onto at the first opportunity. Needless to say that was the last time we were on the veranda.

Making the best of things we decided to go to the pub for dinner. A server approached us and gave us menus and that was the last we saw of anyone. We waited and waited but no one returned to take our order. There were plenty of staff behind the bar so manpower was not the issue. After about 15 minutes we left and decided to try the dining room. There we were served by Heather who was pleasant and efficient and the food, while not excellent, was decent.

We were told upon booking that there would be live music in the pub on Friday nights and were prepared for that. We were ready for sound to be coming from outside from open doors etc. but were not expecting sound to be coming through the floors and walls. While unexpected it was manageable as the band was not a hard rock type and we were able to get some sleep. What was not acceptable were pub patrons who were out in the parking lot screaming and yelling at 2:00 am. after the pub closed. Is this what is meant by full service?

Having a shower the next morning was another experience not soon to be forgotten. Things started off well enough but just as I was about to wash my hair I was scalded by hot water due to a flushing toilet I imagine. As you know there is not that much room in a shower stall allowing one to escape boiling water. After adjusting the hot water to re-balance the temperature I was then assaulted by freezing cold water. I kept my hand on the hot water tap for the rest of the shower to adjust as I went along and finished my shower with one hand.

We had booked for 2 nights but after just 1 we had had enough and checked out. My partner has been in the hotel/hospitality industry for 25 years, working in all manner of establishments from entry level to 5 star accommodation. She looks at things with a more critical eye and naturally she was very disappointed with the whole experience. I have no such expectations from what claims to be a first class establishment and yet I was thoroughly disgusted with the whole experience.

We have stayed at places that cost $250/night and we have stayed at places that cost $50/night Quite frankly even the lowest priced place that we have stayed was superior to the Heriot Bay Inn. Although your pillows and bedcovers are lovely it does not make up for all the shortcomings.

I understand after talking to the woman at the front desk that you have not had the property for long and are constantly making changes and I applaud you for that. After our experience you have a long uphill road ahead of you and I wish you luck and my first suggestion is to change the website to more accurately reflect the inadequacies of the inn so as not to surprise any more patrons.

If you plan on travelling to Quadra find somewhere else to stay.

My wife and I stayed at the HBI in September 2006. This small hotel has a RV and Camping facility as well as cabins in the grounds in addition to a few hotel rooms. We booked into a hotel room which was excellent and had a small private veranda. This faced the back (no problem with this) but there was no sun so we asked for a change of room and paid a supplement for the suite. Sleeps 6 in 2 bedrooms. As it had no reservations we agreed a price. Well worth the money! It has a full kitchen and living area and a sun deck overlooking the bay. You can more than save the extra cost by cooking in with supplies bought in from the local supermarket within walking distance. Great location, great room. Downside - The attached pub has a karyokee evening (usually Sunday) so can be noisy but it does shut down at 11.00 pm . Friendly helpful staff. Everything considered I would heartily recommend this hotel.

We consulted some fellow travelers on our two day trip into the Pacific. Should we go to Tafino or Heriot Bay? They did us well. I don't see how we could have enjoyed any place more than our visit to The Heriot Bay Inn.

Our over night stay turned into 3 nights and would have been more if not for our flight home.

The Inn is charming, updated, offers a variety of options i.e.. rooms, cabins and camping, has a Adventure Center with kayaks, bikes, fishing charters and whale watching.

The staff was Very friendly. The Pub had some of the best live music. Catch "Duffy" if you can. Their Doors set is fantastic.

The restaurant is bright and roomy with lots of out door seating. The food was well above average with a big breakfast being included with the reasonable room cost.

Whale watching with Nick was not inexpensive but well worth it. His knowledge of the area and wild life was extensive & available but not forced.

We loved Port McNeil, Gold River and of course Victoria BUT Heriot Bay Inn was the Crown Jewel of Vancouver Island for me.

ONe of the most beautiful spots in coastal BC, Herriot Bay Inn and Campground has been my families choice for almost a decade. The charming hotel dates from the turn of the century, and the scenery is unbeatable. You have your own semi-private bay to watch the sun set over every night. The restaurant has more outdoor seating than indoor, and it all looks over the water. Food is great, service is excellent, and the pies are delicious. Check out this coastal heaven before everyone else does!
