“Absolutely fantastic!”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

I came to Thorpe Cottage Country Guest House for a rural bank holiday get away and we were not dissapointed.

It is in a stunning location in a very quiet little village (perfect for our get away!) with wonderful views. Upon arrival we were welcomed and immediately made to feel at home. Our host then showed us our room and explained where everything was and how things worked. When left to explore ourselves we realised our every need had been met and could not fault a thing. It was spotless and decorated to an extremely high standard. The beds were VERY comfy which was hugely appreciated after a day of walking in the close by Dovedale area and Manifold valley.

The room is also equipped with a very handy guest information folder with suggestions of where to eat and visit. We had a lovely evening meal at the coach and horses in a nearby village called Fenny Bentley. Our host was also full of local knowledge and willing to answer any questions.

Breakfast was just superb with a choice of cereals, yogurt and fresh fruit. This was followed up with a very scrummy full english breakfast. All was served very promptly and our preferences of drinks were remembered by the host from the evening before.

I will definitely be visiting again and would recommend this place without a doubt!

I never bother with writing reviews but I cant help but feel the need for Thorpe Cottage. We arrived and were given a quick tour of the fuest house and our room.

Normally, as ling as a room is clean I am happy but this was immaculate, as well as beautifully decorated! Incredibly comfy beds with everything you could ask for. TV/radio/various flavours of tea/fresh cookies/fantastic information folder..

Breakfast was fantastic..cereal to start with a ramekin of fruit and a yoghurt followed by a full English..perfect start to a day of walking!

Would definitely recommend and definitely come back! You will not regret staying here..the location is fantastic for access to various villages

My boyfriend and I stayed at Thorpe Cottage Guesthouse on Wednesday 19th February after our trip to alton towers.

Firstly the setting is absolutely beautiful, very rural but a short drive to the nearest town. Ideal for a very relaxing or walking holiday.

When we arrived we were greeted straight away which was lovely and made us feel right at home. The guesthouse was decorated beautifully, very clean and not a thing out of place. We were told everything we needed to know and how to work everything in the room before being left to ourselves.
The room was exceptional and included everything anyone could need. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept like babies through the whole night with no noise or lights keeping us awake. The shower was also lovely and big! Little details like the film library were really nice touches. The guesthouse has it's own entrance for guests meaning you didn't feel like you were on top of the owner and you could do your own thing which we really liked.

We went to a steakhouse on the way into Ashbourne for our meal on Wednesday night (sadly didn't check the name of it) the food was great! My boyfriend had fillet steak while I had chicken in a white wine sauce and we were very impressed. Although the guesthouse is very rural, everything you need is within a short drive. There were also menus available at the guesthouse for a few near restaurants which was a great touch.

The breakfast in the morning was amazing! I couldn't fault anything. An assortment of cereal, fruit pots (presented beautifully), jams, honey and drinks all laid out for us at the table when we came down and our full English breakfast already being cooked. It was also no problem if you didn't want anything on the breakfast. It included bacon, sausages, egg, hash brown, beans, toast and mushrooms. It was impossible to leave there hungry and it was absolutely delicious! We also had a chance to speak to our host, who was a lovely and interesting man, a real people person.

Overall I can't rate this guesthouse highly enough and can't think of anything upon which they could improve! I would recommend anyone looking for a relaxing weekend away a visit and hope to return in the near future.

My boyfriend and I stayed for one night which was an ideal location for us as we were going to Alton Towers.

We were met by the owner,Mike, who was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our room was beautifully decorated, very clean and comfortable. We had a great sleep and felt refreshed the following morning. For those venturing into Ashbourne we would recommend the Thai restaurant 'The Basement'. Our meal was delicious!!

The breakfast at Thorpe Cottage was, as I said, fit for a king. There was cereal, fruit, and a full English breakfast. We did sit around the same table as the other guests but it was very pleasant to chat to everyone.

We had read the reviews before going and I have to say, I only have positive things to say about this place. If returning to Ashbourne/ Alton Towers we would definitely stay here.

A lovely cottage, exceptionally clean and comfortable rooms, and very friendly hosts. The location is excellent for the Tissingon Trail and there are so many lovely walks within a short car journey.
We loved our couple of nights there while we walked in the beautiful countryside!

A wonderful home, in a great location. The breakfast was standard English cooked everyday & delicious. As stated in other reviews, you may wish to consider staying elsewhere should flexibility be important to you. I do wonder whether it's such a good idea to open one's home to strangers when so concerned about possible accidental damage.

Room Tip: The £100 a night rooms are small and to be expected I guess for a cottage so consideration needs to...

We understand you "standing up for the friends you traveled with" And had no issue with either of you, we thought you were both lovely people.
Well accidental damage is one thing, your friends was not ( we assume this is what you're talking about? ) , I don't think you would have liked to see what we had to see proudly displayed daily! We have bins and bags for that sort of thing, and after showering towels should not be in that state!.......Our cleaner after the 1st day refused to clean their room.
We are a little confused as to if breakfast is so important to you at 8am, why would you book somewhere where it's stated on the website, verbally given, and on your confirmation e-mail that's it's served at 9am. And then complain about inflexibility?
We joked about you moving in with the amount of luggage you had brought with you, so again if this was so important to you why would you book a cottage? Virtual Tour of the room was available, so I think it's a little unfair to comment on that, and as I said clue is the title.
Hope your next weekend away is a lovely one.

On the plus side, the cottage was in a fantastic location in a pretty village, ideal for our 4 night walking break with friends. Our room (the Bakewell room) was very comfortable and clean (if a little small) and the standard of the food was of high quality. Mike was a friendly host (we only saw Heather when we first arrived.) On the minus side, in spite of the relatively high price, there was a degree of inflexibility i.e. breakfast was at a set time of 9. 00 am and there was no latitude and no choice as everyone was served at the same time. Also, there was no comfortable residents' lounge in which to relax (although we could use the dining room) nor was there anywhere one could sit in the garden. Some of the rules and regulations appeared rather petty to us.

Well what do I say? You knew breakfast was served at 9am and everyone sits together
so why book if this was a problem.
We do say we only do a full english breakfast, along with fresh fruit and yogurt/cereals ..again why book if this was a problem .
We are a cottage, so I wouldn't expect massive rooms, ( clue is in the title LOL) although our Chatsworth room is very large and was available. You took the virtual tour of the room, so again
why book if this room was a problem.
We do not advertise a Guest Lounge, as we do not have one, again if this was a problem for you why book.
"Rules" ...........I get a little fed up of this, everyone knows them up front, we do not hide anything,
as I've said before, due to the dreadful amount of damage we've had to our home
we no longer allow alcohol or take-aways in our rooms, this is our home, and we have been so hurt and disappointed by peoples lack of respect for other peoples property that they are not
permitted, again we tell you all this up front, so if it's such a problem for you, again why book?
As my father was critically ill, and thought to be dying, you won't see me as he comes first, as I should imagine for most people this would be the case, but Mike was here and took very good
care of you.
I am still in shock at the dreadful state you left our beautiful room in everyday, which was just
awful.......... and I am way too polite to say what was left all over our towels each and every day, and other things that were left on clear display daily. Even though bins and bags are provided.
If it's important to you to be able to drink and bring take-aways into someone else home, then I think it would be wise in future if you know these things are not allowed, then please don't book.
