Waterton Springs Campground
Reviewed 3 September 2012

Grounds are a bit unkempt. We booked 3 weeks in advance and ended up double booked on a site. When we arrived, there was a family already set up on our site, so they had to find somewhere else to put us. The sites they found were nice enough. Well treed and reasonably private. (We were in tents). Sites were clean. Showers and firewood were a bit expensive. Firewood is actually the cheapest in the area, though. We looked around in Waterton Village and found the cheapest to be $8.40, whereas it is $6 at the campground. Only recreation for kids is a set of swings. They do buy back unused shower tokens, and when one of them got eaten by the machine in the men's shower, they reimbursed us with 2. We also decided to leave a night early as it was a cold weekend and the area is known for being extremely windy, and they reimbursed us for the night. It is acceptable, but not really exceptional.

Recently I had the pleasure of camping at Waterton Springs Campground for several nights. The tenting sites are well-treed & organized in such a manner that there is shelter from the ongoing winds, as well as privacy from neighbours. Because the tent sites are separate from the RV sites, campers don't have the noise of generators, which is a relaxing relief. The campground is a good blend of manicured and wild landscaping, supporting the relaxed, family atmosphere. On the one occasion when a group of campers were noisy & unruly late at night, the efficient, capable staff settled the situation quickly & quietly. The washrooms & showers were clean & relatively large, providing basic comfort for the numerous people using the facilities. My thanks also to the staff who showed patience, knowledge & humour in dealing with the numerous questions campers seem to have; at the end of the day the staff were still smiling! I will definitely by back again. Thanks!

On arrival at Waterton Springs, we were shocked that it looked so unkempt; weeds growing everywhere and dirt blowing from the interior roads. We ended up in a long tent site with no hookups in our 5th wheel, which was the best looking spot in the park. Trailer Life says that this park has a dump station, but it was not working and looked like it had been a long time since it had. It also advertises a wi-fi- hotspot, but it was a joke. Got on a few times only to be kicked off very quickly. The young people in the office were friendly, but they could never help with any problem, from bad wi-fi ("there is no upgrade available here") to finding a stopper for the laundry sink. When I asked about the weeds, I was told that the place was owned by a nature conservancy and they preferred it to look "natural". The location was very handy to Waterton N.P., but we would not recommend this park.

Thank you for your review! Waterton Springs Campground is indeed owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The property is essentially a nature reserve, so mowing anything other than campsites is discouraged from the Nature Conservancy. What a great place to enjoy the true natural beauty of this area! New development of any kind is also prohibited.

Unfortunately, our dump station has been in disrepair since the beginning of the 2012 season.

Internet in this part of the country is very un-reliable, as most people who live in the area year round would tell you. That is why we offer it as a free service!

We have been going to Waterton Springs for the past three years and have loved it. It is a very quiet campground bordering Waterton National Park which in my experience i have never heard any party or music after 10 pm. It is well away from the highway so you do not have vehicles driving by all day and night. They have been steadily improving the campground and it is being very well maintained. This spring they put in a new water system and there has been no issues. It is not a 5 star luxury campground. They have basic flush toilets and cold water taps in the sinks all over the campground which are kept very clean. The showers are token operated , $1 gets you four minutes -plenty of time. For the showers take a shopping bag or tote bag with you to put your clothes and things into as there is no bench or stool in the shower just two hooks. The playground equipment is old fashioned swings, slide, and teeter totter but I see a lot of kids playing on them and having fun, if they have to have waterslides and the hi priced equipment this is not the place for them. Remember this is camping. You are supposed to be enjoying the simpler things in life and nature. There is an interpretive trail you can walk lots of bird life, and bring a star chart for the evenings as this is a wonderful place to lie back and find constellations. There are is wildlife around the campground at times so ensure you camp 'Bear Smart' ensuring your food is put away and your site kept clean.
There are great views in every direction from the campground which never fails to impress people staying here.
We dry camp here so have not parked where the serviced sites are. Most all these sites are on the open grass area with little or no shade and can get windy at times. I don't know of any fully serviced campsites near Waterton that are any better as all of them are in the open with few or no trees. Wind can be a problem anywhere in southern Alberta so you have to always keep things tied down because you never know when. For those that are tenting or have smaller units without hookups they have wonderful sites. They have fire pits which is a must for camping (not provided in the Waterton Townsite Campground). Roads are all gravel but in good shape and it can get a little dusty at times but has not been a big issue. When people travel into or out of the campground doing 20 or 30 kmph they raise a lot of dust so slow down be considerate of others
The staff here have always been very helpful and friendly. Too bad about the people who had their reservation messed up i am sure they staff felt bad but you can see they are concerned about their guests as many places would not give you a refund if they had another site for them. The main office has a only few items for sale so if you need something you pretty much have to bring it with you or get it when in the Waterton townsite. The campground is only a three minute drive to the Waterton Park entrance and you pass by the turn to the buffalo paddock which is well worth a quick tour.
Overall a very good campground, quiet, great location and some of the best dry camp and tenting sites around. The fully serviced sites are out in the open but they are as good as any other in the area. When you call to book your site tell them what you want and I am sure they will do their best to find a site that meets your needs. Waterton Springs is extremely quiet after the Sept. long weekend and is a great location to go viewing elk from. We can go to any campground around Waterton National Park but we continue to choose this one.

Room Tip: If you don't need hookups ask for sites in the treed area which is primarily for tents but some...

I booked a camp spot for the long weekend a week in advance they asked for a three day booking to hold the spot for the entire weekend and I paid in advance. They guaranteed me a treed spot and gave me a site number which I knew from camping there before. I called while driving down (3.5 hrs from Calgary) and they said my site was OK. When I arrived my site was gone and I was given two site options both in open fields. They refunded my money but my weekend was done. It is a "camp ground", the facilities are dated and are a struggle to keep maintained. I may stay there again as the location across the highway from the park is animal free so usually pretty tame except the coyotes noises. It is not a place to be on long weekends as the partying is not well controlled and they give the sites away to first come even if reserved. So I guess not dependable, but OK for less busy times as a hiking base in the park. The main facility has a few vending machines, wood and showers, washers and dryers. Make sure if you are tenting that you are in a wooded area as the winds often get over 50kms/hr and well tied down. I have been in winds there in excess of 100kms/hr and once had my tent lift off the ground
with me in it (215 lbs) and while tied to 30lb rocks.
The options for tent camping here are very limited besides this place as the Park Campground Crandell is very busy (no guarantees) and prone to animal migration. Bears and Cougars are fairly common here and oth black and grizzlies are seen driving in along the roadway. The campgroung in the town site is at the lake edge in an open field primarily for RV's (looks more like a parking lot).
Why does such a beautiful park and neighbouring area have so little to offer in the way of good camping like Glacier, Banff and Kananaskis.

Thank you for your review. It is campground policy that if any camper calls in advance and requests a specific site(s) to reserve, then they are guaranteed the site they asked for (granted that it is open when they called to make the reservation).

We always hold sites for those who have made reservations. We also recommend that reservations are made in advance for any campers wishing to stay with us during the summer months (July and August). We fill up very quickly on weekends and are often booked up with reservations in advance for the weekends.

It was an unfortunate mistake that we acknowledge. Much of it had to do with worker inexperience. Our apologies. We hope to see you again soon.

Waterton Springs campground is on the park boundary with Waterton Lakes National Park and borders a piece of Nature Conservancy protected prairie. A trip to this campground is all about location and views. Because it is on prairie there are unobstructed views of the mountains and sunsets over them are a highlight. Because the campground is on flat prairie there are also long views down the Waterton Lakes valley and far into the U.S. Views are actually better from Waterton Springs than they are in the Waterton National park campgrounds. The camp ground itself is thin on amenities. Yes, there are water and power hookups at RV sites (not at tent sites). Bathrooms are OK, but certainly not fancy. There is a very basic store in the camp office. In the many years we have visited Waterton Springs, staff have always been helpful and friendly. We also have never had problems with nearby rowdy campers. Neighbors have always been courteous and quieted down before midnight.
