“Great location, good service”
Reviewed 29 January 2014

The manager here is most helpful, even arriving late at night. The location is great, the prices fair, a clean well managed Hostel/Guesthouse. There are both private rooms and dorm rooms here, your best value in Powell River.

My friend just bought a place in Powell River. In September, when looking for homes, we spent a night at the Courthouse Inn, which was great, rooms are eccentric and eclectic and the cafe is excellent. But this time to PR we decided to try the Hostel, after all, it's late November, we're just going to sleep there and go on to sign papers, get keys to new home the next day. But still. I like a nice place to rest my head. And this is a nice place - for half the price we paid at the Courthouse.

We phoned ahead to reserve a private room. We weren't asked for a VISA #, just what time we thought we'd get there. We checked in and the owner, an interesting Swiss host, showed us our room. Two twin bunk beds, a window to the ocean view, a small desk, wifi. Simple. Clean. No private bathroom, but the one down the hall ticked all the necessity boxes. I can be squeamish on shared bathrooms, but no squeaming here.

It's like staying at a family home - everyone has their own room, we all share a bathroom (like home), and then convene in the centre of the house when we want, which has a very accommodating kitchen, dining area, reading area, living room, outdoor deck, and hospitality - a fellow who was staying there insisted on sharing all his fruit and making tea for us.

Centrally located, we walked up to a Latin Restaurant for dinner about 10 mins away up the street which was truly outstanding.

It served our purpose exactly.

I stayed here with my brother and father whom both had never stayed at a hostel before. We had an incredible experience. The manager is what makes this place such a gem on top of everything else. It is so well cared for, accessible (right on the ocean at the ferry terminal) and stunning views. This hostel has been my best ever experience. We were here on a motorbike trip and wish I could have stayed longer.

As a respite from noisy overcrowded campsites we took a punt on this place and were more than pleasantly surprised. The private room with its own balcony overlooking the sea is lovely and very restful. The hostel isn't new or flash but it's spotlessly clean and well equipped.

Very handy for the ferry terminal and a short walk up to Powell River's main drag though in a more industrial location. Would happily return.

The hostel is located near the ferry terminal to the islands and near the beach. Convenient location with a thai, japanese restaurants, liquor store and a pub nearby. We have a party of 7 on a sunshine coast holiday and we were given 2 Rooms which are large and clean. There is a nice, clean and large kitchen with necessary kitchen wares. We bought some food and had our dinner on the deck overlooking the ferry terminal and the beach and watched the sun set. We really enjoyed our stay.

This place is really more like a hotel than a hostel.
It is located right by the water and the ferry (from Vancouver Island) and has a nice little patio to sit outside and enjoy the sunset over the Island.

The common room, which is nicely decorated and huge, was tidy and clean and the room was spacious and clean as well.
The price for the private room was good value (ca. $30 per person, icl. tax).

The only thing, or person rather, I have to criticize was the guy at the reception (I think it was the owner). First I thought that he was only joking with us but after our conversation ended with an obvious statement that he didn't like the German language which I consider an insult when you are from Germany and only trying to make some casual conversation (in english!) with a guy that is originally from Switzerland, I have to say that this is a bad first impression for your guests/customers that just arrived.

But apart from that (and maybe you are lucky enough not to ask the guy where he is from) I'd definitely recommend this place for staying.

Room Tip: I don't think there are any bad rooms in that place, so I can only recommend to ask for a room t...

I often book a private room in a hostel to get better value than a motel and because I like the shared amenities like the kitchen, hang out areas and internet. But as often as not the shared amenities are dirty and run down.

But not this place! The room was basic but very clean and nice. But the kitchen, living room and deck really rocked -- super clean, very nicely equipped kitchen with utensils and pots and pans that were good quality, great deck overlooking the harbour and fast wifi which worked throughout the place.

And the location is perfect...just above the ferry from Vancouver Island and in the midst of the most interesting part of Powell River's commercial district.
