“Nice surprise at the beginning of Hwy 101”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2012

Lund, a small town at the beginning of Hwy 101, offered a nice surprise with the Desolation Resort. We stayed at Chalet 10, one of the newer chalets, perfect for the 4 of us. Clean, cozy, and well equipped with a great view over the sound. The warm welcome and advise of the proprietors, who spoke English and German and were well traveled themselves, was very appreciated. We enjoyed the inclusive kayak rental to explore the ocean in front of the resort. If you are planning on preparing your own meals, consider stocking up in Powell River. Given the choices of accommodations in Lund, we will consider the Desolation Resort again.

Room Tip: Enjoyed the two level Chalet 10 as it was at one end of the property, has adjacent parking and nice...

We spent 4 nights at Desolation Resort with our two dogs. Our cottage was great - very clean, spacious, and well equipped. If you are looking for a getaway to get away from it all, this is a good bet. With our dogs along for the experience, we were somewhat limited in what we could and couldn't do but we still had a pleasant time. We found some great trails on our last day a few km down the road (some better guidance would have been great from the staff). But they are very approachable and friendly. One small heads up. We stayed in one of the 4a/4b units (only ones with DVD players by the way). Regardless of which one you stay in, you overlook the other (both sitting on balcony and when you are sitting inside). It's the way they are designed. Not a huge deal but when you are wanting to be isolated, you actually end up being fairly exposed to your neighbour! Other than that, it was a great experience.

Room Tip: the benefit of 4a or 4b is they are the only ones with DVD players. The downside is they overlook e...

Just experienced a lovely stay at Desolation Resort in Powell River. It was wonderful to stay on the water and be able to enjoy a glass of wine on our deck and enjoy the view of Okeover Arm. The furnishings inside our 2-bdrm wood cabin were very tasteful. The night sky was incredible! Just a 5 minute walk from the amazing Laughing Oyster restaurant made this stay even more relaxing. Bring a flashlight if you walk home after sunset. It was dark, but luckily we had the full moon to guide us.

Room Tip: Room 4 has only a partial water view.

My husband and I spent one night in Chalet 5, a huge self-contained cottage that would easily sleep 6. We were in the area and would have loved 2 nights but they were fully booked and I can see why. We were travelling with our small dog and found the place through a pet-friendly site. The chalets are cozy, clean and fully equipped for a family stay. There are cooking and eating utensils, a microwave and gas BBQ. The large deck is perfect for looking out on beautiful Desolation Sound. There are kayaks and boats available to guests. Unfortunately, weather and time did not permit us to do a cruise on the sound, but you can easily do so at Y Knot Charters, just down the road. We will definitely come back and stay longer. A real getaway for couples or families.
We had a great dinner at the Laughing Oyster, an easy walk from the chalet. An unexpectedly upscale restaurant for this part of the world, with gorgeous views from the deck (reservations suggested for a railing table) Good service and food and a lovely atmosphere completed our very pleasant stay in the area. We will come back and repeat our visit.

Room Tip: Chalet 5 is huge and was dog-friendly. Well equipped - bring your groceries and have a BBQ if you a...

This is a great place to stay and appreciate the beauty of BC. We stayed 3 nights in Chalet #10. Very clean, very private, all amenities worked. I would recommend spending a day on Savary Island and rent bikes to explore the island. It's a short water taxi ride from Lund. Be sure to have lunch at Nancy's Bakery in Lund. Just wonderful food. The market in Lund is also well stocked but more expensive than supermarkets in Powell River. Also recommend the Laughing Oyster Restaurant - food is pricey but well worth it. Hard to believe a restaurant of this caliber exists in such a remote area.

An excellent place to stay with friends on a kayaking holiday in Desolation Sound. The holiday homes are large, the rooms are large, comfortable and cosy, and the freely available canoes and kayaks ( tiny ones) are pretty good too. Weather can be changeable. Bring waterproofs.

Spent 4 nights here in winter of 2009 and absolutely loved it. Just writing this review makes me want to go back. The cabins are amazing, the owners are extremely friendly, and the location could not be better. The weekend could not have been more relaxing and the scenery is beautiful. They have free kayaks that we missed out on since it was snowing while we were there. When we went in the winter, they had a special...pay for 3 nights, get a 4th free. There is a grill on the deck for outdoor cooking. They also allow pets. I also recommend the restaurant next door (about a km walk), their mussels are fantastic.
