Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens, and National Historic Site of Canada, started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“Simply Gorgeous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014

We have visited Victoria three times and devoted a full day each time to Butchart Gardens, one of the most beautiful in the world. You will appreciate its beauty even if you aren't especially a flower person. If you are, then you'll be in heaven. An excellent restaurant serves Afternoon Tea, which is an oh-so-nice British touch and a good chance to rest your feet. Butchart is about 30 minutes north of Victoria and we've found the most convenient way of getting there to be a CVS shuttle bus leaving every hour or so from Government Street in front of the Empress Hotel. Costs about $55 a person, but includes admission to the Gardens (which is about $35 if bought separately) and you get a nice commentary about what you're passing going and coming. Transportation, admission and city sightseeing, all in one. You can take any bus back so you're not tied to any schedule. Victoria is a wonderful city and Butchart is its crowning glory. You shouldn't miss it.

“An Absolute Must See”

Quite breath taking, an inspiration to us all. Click on to www.butchartgardens.com to see what I mean. To transform a worked-out limestone quarry into these magnificent gardens just goes to show that you can make a sow's ear into a silk purse. Truly wonderful!! If you ever get the chance to come to England check out The Eden Project in Cornwall or Compton Acres in Dorset to add to your enjoyment. There are others but you have to start somewhere, you could make yourself a hobby.

My husband and I aren't particularly 'garden people' but visited here as part of an organized tour. We had to split our time between the gardens and Victoria and on reflection we should have spent more time at the gardens. The gardens were beautiful. Words cannot express how much we were taken aback by them. We don't know a great deal about flowers but the overall impression we had was just one of pure delight. Well worth a visit and the ice creams were pretty good too!

“Must see attraction”

We visited here while on our anniversary trip to BC. We visited in the afternoon, had dinner on the grounds. They also had a summer concert that evening. We came back and enjoyed a really nice outdoor concert.

This was one of the highlights of our trip - I wouldn't go to Victoria without going here - it is just absolutely breathtaking.

This is the most amazing gardens we have ever seen. So nicely laid out, and even though the roses weren't blooming yet, everything else was in full bloom! Our children really enjoyed this, too. The sunken gardens were our favorite. A must see in this area!
