Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens, and National Historic Site of Canada, started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“One of the most beautiful gardens”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Plan a day for travel and sightseeing; The Butchart Gardens are truely breathtaking. The gardens will require 2+ hours to explore and enjoy. They are exquisite in composition and include the magnificant Sunken Garden and a stunning Asian Stroll Garden. The grounds are immaculate and the staff friendly and helpful. I feel privileged to have been able to visit it.

“AMAZING - You must go!”

One of the most amazing places I have ever been too. My mom loves flowers and she was in heaven. The variety of flowers from all over the world was just breathtaking. A must do especially if part of a tour.

“Fireworks up close”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Strange but true: I'm writing a review of the renowned Butchart Gardens and, except for a remarkable bank of red geraniums near the entrance, saying nothing about the flowers! I recently visited specifically to witness the Saturday evening fireworks display, and it was definitely worth the trip. The fireworks start after 10 pm, when it gets dark enough to see them clearly.
Other displays I've seen have the fireworks some distance from the audience, but the configuration of the site at the gardens allows for them to be very close, even at ground level, which makes for some fascinating effects. One I especially enjoyed, to the music of "Baby Elephant Walk", showed what appeared to be an elephant parade along the edge of the lake--marvelous! The display lasts about 20 minutes altogether, and I really wanted it to go on, I enjoyed it so much. And as a lovely touch, an organist played Bach as we left.
But don't just go for the fireworks--try to arrive at least an hour early so you don't have to rush to the fireworks site. You should literally stop and smell the roses!
If you use public transit, the #81 bus stops some distance from the gardens, necessitating a long downhill walk.

“Beautiful gardens and amazing fireworks!”
Reviewed 27 July 2014 via mobile

Went to gardens on Saturday so had fireworks at 9:45. They don't allow re-entry on firework days so we decided to go around 3:30. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy the wonderful flowers especially in the sunken gardens. For photographers, the lighting is not the best at this time, probably earlier in the morning is better or just wait until after dinner. The smell of the flowers were amazing.
Bring a blanket for the fireworks, something that's waterproof too, the grass is damp. People started claiming their spots on the lawn early, we went after 7, still lots of spots. Fireworks were spectacular, worth waiting for.
