Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

This was an amazing attraction. The gardens cover more than 5 acres with over 1 million plantings and several distinctly different gardens - Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden and Italian Garden, all abloom with strikingly beautiful plants and trees.
Do NOT rush through here. Take time to enjoy all the beauty of the flowers and other plants and how they are so wonderfully displayed. Even with a large crowd of fellow customers, it's easy to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the various gardens.

We'd heard wonderful things about the gardens, so were looking forward to our visit. None of us are gardeners, but we appreciate the aesthetics of a well tended garden. In this regard, you can't be disappointed; there are some incredible landscapes and features, which must take an enormous amount of time and effort to maintain. However, for adult admission of over $30, we felt that there wasn't enough to see or do. A slow walk around took little over an hour, and the place really would have benefited from some interpretation or an exhibition. Or failing that, some more gardens. Having visited many gardens at houses and palaces over the years, I find in hard to justify the massive entrance fee when thinking about Butchart.

My sister was born in Victoria and wanted to renew ties with BC
We ferried into Vancouver Island and highlight was strolling thru these majestically well manicured gardens
Hard to believe an old quarry could be restored to such a sight
Maybe we should send them to Alberta to repair eye sore of oil sands fiasco

Has to be 1 of the top 10 anywhere in the world. Simply amazing . You will need hours to enjoy the different areas. Have tons of memory in your camera, you'll need it. Words cannot do these gardens justice, you need to visit or look at pictures to imagine the size and scope. I've never seen so many flowers and beautiful landscaped areas anywhere. This is DO NOT MISS.

We travelled to the gardens via public bus from the parliament buildings- simple, fast, easy and cheap. The bus drivers are very helpful and help you at every opportunity. We arrived around 9am- an early start to avoid extra tourists... for the first hour.

The gardens are beautifully prepared and managed, overflowing with colourful flowers. Stunningly beautiful gardens in a beautiful setting (former limestone quarry); the flowers are the highlight. The Japanese garden is also beautiful, best such garden since my last Kyoto trip.

The gardens are a photographers delight and we spent a couple hours enjoying the gardens; half a day is sufficient for most people.
