Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

One of the disadvantages of visiting Victoria via cruise is that often your ship gets there at sunset, so you are condemned to view everything under the vail of darkness, with some sprinkled artificial lighting that will prove grossly inadequate. I have seen many botanical gardens all over the world, and this one did not impress by comparison, though it did have a rather large sales center, where among other things you could get lots of flower seeds of any kind to take "no questions asked" home to the US. I wish I could see it again but when the sun is out, to give it justice. Just don't go seeing at night, it is not worth the $$$

It was beautiful, I had visited as a child and forgotten how well kept and lovely it is. The admission price was exorbitant however! It is sad that people with families will turn away because of that price.

Breathtaking beautiful! Full of flowers, picture perfect. The Dining Room's afternoon tea is very traditional and sooooooo delicious, especially those sandwiches.

Seems like everything was in bloom when we went which made it outstanding! We especially liked the Rose Garden and Italian courtyard where we sat and had a refreshing gelato. Forget the boat ride because all you see is a harbor and a lot of broken down boats! Not worth the price.
