Restaurant is located at the northern end of the Village of Brentwood Bay, in a very rustic, rambling building. Even midweek this place was hopping, but we were quickly seated. They do have all day breakfast that we both chose, but a quick glance at the full menu revealed a good choice at reasonable prices. The food was excellent, as was the service.

We ate at Zanzibar last night after revelling in the Christmas displays at Butchart Gardens. It was the perfect spot. Warm, inviting, funky atmosphere with incredibly good food. The four of us shared the Brie and the beet salad as appetizers, and then two of us had lamb burgers, one had the shanks and the other the butter chicken. For desert we had one cream brûlée with four spoons. Everything was absolutely delicious! Great service and reasonable prices as well. Certainly recommend it!

After reading the reviews I really wanted to make my own opinion of this place.
From the side of the road it doesn't look like anything. Once you get in it's much more inspiring. and when you get to try your meal it is so unique tasty and delicious you want to try another one.

We were 3 and shared our dish and the best dish for all of us was the vegetarian phillopastry with parsnip.

The service was excellent and the girl just warned us that due to the big christmas party (table of 20) the kitchen was very busy at the moment. So it will be a little extra time. We knew what to expect then and didn't have to wait that much longer after all.

Yes the place is pretty funky and the bathroom trip a little cold but eh it's an african style restaurant so don't worry too much about that !

This cafe is set on the edge of Brentwood Bay, not far from Butchart Gardens. It's a funky old building that has a main section plus a glassed- in addition which was likely once a sun room. Would not recommend seating in the glassed in area in colder weather as we found it quite chilly despite their best efforts to heat it. The main section is comfortable. The food focuses on fresh, healthy ingredients and portions are generous. The soups are hearty as are the accompanying breads, and the salads are interesting and flavourful mixes. We especially like this restaurant for lunches. It can get quite busy at peak lunch hours especially on week-ends.

On a country corner between an Indian reservation and the village of Brentwood Bay seems an unlikely place for a successful restaurant. On the other hand it's close to Sidney and pretty close to Victoria.
Zanzibar is crowded and lively and you're part of the scene. The wait staff are thoughtful, friendly, and they hustle. The menu runs to gamut of soup and burgers and fries to fresh fish excellently prepared and calorific desserts. The house wine is the quite palatable Dunavar.
Set up in a large cottage there is dining for you and the wasps on the galleries or for you alone in the living rooms and conservatory. You access the loo by going only the balcony and squeezing by the kitchen. I love seeing the kitchen and all the kitchen staff are so close they seem to enjoy being part of the scene too.
It's always packed. We lucked in one day at four o'clock and they technically weren't open but we got a great late lunch. The next time we reserved and we were glad we did because the community seems to be a big supporter.
Check the hours during the winter (as if we had winter!).
