My wife and I, and friends just spent 10 days at this hidden gem of a hotel in the Piemonte region of Italy. This is a small, family operated property in wine and truffle country, with an exceptional, Michelin Star, restaurant which is also run by the family. The Ferretto family, Roberto in the hotel, Walter, the chef, and Roberto's daughter, Alice, were warm and welcoming and saw to our every need. The hotel and restaurant are modern in decor and spotless throughout. Because the property is outside of the city, it provided for a very relaxing atmosphere. But it provides easy access via the Autostrada to Asti, Alba, Turin and the rest of the region. We can't wait to return during truffle season for another visit.....Ron S., La Quinta, CA

We stay at Il Cascinale Nuovo from 9/28/10 to 10/07/10. In every respect, our stay was outstanding and exceeded our expectations. From the spacious rooms and bathrooms to the sumptuous breakfast buffet, this small hotel was wonderful and a bargain. The Ferretto family, which both own and operate the hotel, are always on premises and eager to assist with any need or request of their guests. They were very helpful in recommending restaurants and organizing visits to local wineries. A real bonus is their One Michelin Star restaurant connected to the hotel. Walter Ferretto is the chef creating amazing quality food and his brother, Roberto runs the front of the restaurant in addition to being a most knowledgable and helpful sommelier. There is no pretense here. Just a wonderful family running a hotel which is a great value and well located in the Piemonte region of Italy, about halfway between Asti and Alba. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are returning to Il Cascinale Nuovo for another week next October during the grape and truffle harvest period. We highly recommend Il Cascinale Nuove hotel and restaurant. The experience was truly memorable.

One of the most overlooked great restaurants in Piemonte continues to be the Michelin one star, Il Cascinalenuovo in Isola D'Asti.

My wife and I have been there perhaps 30 times in the past 20 years and the restaurant just keeps getting better and better. In addition to the restaurant, "Cascinale" is an albergo as well, and has 15 extremely comfortable modern rooms. After a long leisurely great dinner with lots of wine, from an incredible and very reasonably priced wine list, it is an easy trip upstairs and one avoids the hassle of getting into a car.

Cascinale, is equidistant from both Alba and Asti (a short 15 minute ride to each) and is also a great place to stay for a "first or last night" if coming from or going to the airport at Malpensa, which is an hour and a half away, all on good autostrade (you don't get near the traffic clogged autostrade close to Milan).

The brothers Walter (the chef) and Roberto (in charge of the dining room) Ferretto are extremely warm, genial, and generous hosts. The restaurant seats about sixty, with the tables well spaced, in a comfortable, airy and light dining room. Service is gracious without being fawning. The food is traditional Piemontese cooking at a very high level.

The pasta is etherial; how Walter does it is amazing, but he does. Classic tajarin with a ragu di fegatelli di piccione. Tortelloni ai funghi porcini. Agnolotti "del plin". Ravioli stuffed with eggplant. These are among some that we've had, one better than the next. Other primi might be gnochetti di patate con ragu di maiale e salsiccia; risotto con zucca gialla e tartufo. Antipasti and zuppe might include millefoglie di lingua di vitello e foie gras or perhaps zuppa di fagioli orzo e lenticche con calamari or insalata con funghi porcini and filletto d'anatra con aceto balsamico. Rabbit, pigeon, game and fish are abundant for the main courses.

The menu changes often and everything is seasonal. The flavors of the dishes are strong and vibrant. In the October and November, as you walk into the dining room, there is the unmistakable aroma of white truffles, which are heavily emphasized in dishes at that time of year. Desserts, unusual for Italian restaurants are equally as exquisite as the other courses.

And then there is the wine list. As one would expect from being right next to Barbaresco and only a stone's throw further to Barolo, it is heavy on both, with all the major producers represented in all the right years. Roberto, however, has gone further and has also sought out less well known producers who make great wines. All the other Piemontese varieties (e.g Barbera) are represented as well. As I said, the list is very reasonably priced, certainly with among the lowest markups of any major restaurant in Piemonte. Roberto knows his wines well and is only too happy to speak with you about the list (both Walter and Roberto speak English).

This is a great place to go. Everyone we've sent there over the years can't wait to get back.

I've stayed in the Cascinale Nuovo Hotel on many occasions with work over the last few years, and was there most recently earlier this month. It is easy to find on the main road between Asti and Alba and in a very convenient location for the surrounding villages. However be warned that it is not in a particularly scenic spot, being just off the road and close to factories and other places of work. If you plan on stopping here for the scenery then this isn't the place for you.

The rooms are clean and very spacious - some have been redone over the last few years and are very modern in style, others still have more than a hint of the seventies about them but nothing to complain about! There is no lift (that I have ever found) and no porter to carry bags, so you may need to specify a room on the ground floor when booking, if required.

The best thing about this hotel is its fantastic restaurant. Great food - the best of what Piedmont has in season - and a fantastic wine list, with the emphasis on local wines. Breakfast back on the hotel side of the building though has always been a bit disappointing - cheese, ham, yoghurt, bread, cake and a bit of fruit. Best to make sure you have a big dinner in the restaurant!

All in all, i would highly recommend this as for a one night stopover - or at very least, dinner - as you explore the region.

This is a small hotel attached to an excellent restaurant. The staff was gracious, the rooms very comfortable, and the best breakfasts of the whole trip. Would go back in a minute

On the road between Alba and Asti, you will find a small hotel and restaurant that is perfect for touring this region. The Feretto family has created a note-worthy establishment with a passion for food, wine and gracious hospitality. The hotel rooms are spotless, comfortable, modern Italian with large bathrooms. Ours had a double sink and a shower big enough for a party. One outstanding diner there was all we could do because the restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings. But our host recommended other places, and we had a memorable meal a few miles down the road in Canove in a farm commune establishment. We had day trips to Turin, Saluzzo, Bra, Asti, Alba, Barolo and other charming, ancient towns where we were surrounded by the people who live there, not hordes of tourists. Four days was simply not enough to enjoy this region.
