Owner description: This flat stretch of land high up in the mountains of Crete is rumored to be the birthplace of Zeus.

We did a day tour of the Lassithi Plateau with Safari Club Crete and it was a highlight of our trip. We did this drive in a very sturdy four wheel drive, with some parts off road which was a bit hairy in places but the paved roads up here are good if you are ok with heights and some hair pin turns. The scenery that you are rewarded with is very special and memorable. The plateau is situated roughly 70km east of Heraklion and sits at 840m altitude (2760ft). It is a very fertile farming area and you'll see lots of different crops and vegetables being grown here.

We drove round the Lassithi Plateau yesterday in our little hired car. Gorgeous scenery and villages. The roads were good and wide even though there were hairpins corners . The valleys were green and fertile, olive trees, apples and pears dotted throughout the Plateau. Up in the mountains about 3000 feet high, the air clear . We had a lovely lunch in a taverna and enjoyed the scenery . It a must to experience the lovely scenery around the plsteau

Drove up from direction of Malia. The roads are mainly OK but in places flimsy wire fences are all there is between you and a steep drop. Some roads are single lane through villages but once on the plain all OK. Only remnants of old windmills left, the villages are a bit time-worn but this is old crete. Tradition is the sense you get.
The cave at Diktion is very touristy. A long climb uphill on a paved then rough path then steps down into the cave itself. You've driven all that way payed for the carpark(2.50) so you may as well pay the extra 6 to see the cave.

It is well worth circular tour of the Plain. If your relatively fit then a walk up to the Dikteon Caves. The first third of the path is hard. It then zig zags back and forward, with 200 or so steps down into the cave and obviously the same back up. Glad we did it. There are good tavernas on the plain if you are in a car. Not so many windmills these days and fewer working mills.

We visited this beautiful plateau over 20 years ago and wanted to go back. It is just as beautiful although it was sad to see some of the little villages appearing to struggle a little economically. We visited the Dikteon Cave en route, which was well worth the uphill climb and steps down into the cave. A lovely peaceful way to spend part of the day and a change to the busier seaside towns.
