En route to friends up in Yorkshire, we decided to detour off M.1 (tedious) and go via the Dales (neither of us had been before) & this seemed a fairly good central location and had Chatsworth House nearby.

We accepted the Package of B&B and Dinner and felt that it represented a good deal. The Dinner was super, fresh, wholesome, nicely cooked & well-presented with attentive Service. Breakfast was wonderful - a full cooked to order Option and excellent buffet spread - Coffee was brilliant too, as was the Service.

Our only overheads were Newspapers, Bar/Wine and Chatsworth House tickets.

It is obviously a very old House (no idea of its actual age) converted some years ago into a Hotel. Note I did not say modernised. Most of the floors are uneven, ceilings are low, doors were invariably not square and most of the windows are leaded-glass. Some of the furnishings are a bit eclectic (uber modern in our opinion) and out-of-place in such a classic old house - odd ! Many wobbled on the uneven floors too. But then - seriously old houses with uneven floors ... adds to the character, we feel.

Delightful snug bar with roaring open log fire ! Fabulous on that evening when it was freezing out.

Delightful stay in a delightful part of the World.

Recommended.

Room Tip: Room 7 was really nice, but small, snug, cosy, compact !

we booked an overnight stay for my birthday. Just before we arrived my glasses fell to pieces - a screw had fallen out. We had nothing with which to fix it, but my husband asked the receptionist, who very quickly found a tiny screwdriver that did the job perfectly. We had a lovely dinner and on returning to our room found not only a chocolate and a message "sweet dreams" but also a five-day weather forecast. A memorable stay ad we fully intend to return.

This was our second visit to the Peacock, the first being all of 10 years ago, and we were interested to find out if our second stay would be as memorable as our first : fortunately, it was. The décor and feel of the place is everything you would expect from a small, private, country hotel and as comfortable as you could wish for. Good in-room facilities, prompt room service and an extensive library of DVDs (which we didn't have time to utilise on this visit).

We had dinner in the restaurant, which was exceptional - nothing more, nothing less - and with the dinner, B&B package, fair value for the quality being provided. Nicely paced, elegantly served and beautifully prepared. The wine we chose (Chateau La Fleur Coterie 2009) was superb and quite fairly priced too.

The additional cost of cooked food at breakfast is perhaps something management should think over, although it probably suits guests who don't wish to have a cooked breakfast.

We recently spent one night here and my only regret is that it wasn't for any longer. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we could not have enjoyed it more.

We were offered free tea/coffee on arrival in the lounge with delicious biscuits and which was served in front of the open applewood log fire. Our room (at the back of the hotel because of possible road noise) was excellent with fluffy towels, slippers and a very comfortable bed.

We ate from the Fine Dining Menu and have never had such a wonderful array of delicious food presented to us. We chose to eat in the cosy bar (again with an open applewood log fire) and took advice as to our choice from Peter the lovely barman. The waiting staff were delightful and friendly, as were all the staff.

I have read the comments about lack of included cooked breakfast - but when you have eaten as well as we did the previous evening we would not have wanted a cooked breakfast - which is available at a small supplement.

Despite the awful weather we had a lovely time at the Peacock, could not fault anything about it and have rarely been to such a delightful and friendly hotel. Well done and thank you to all at the Peacock and for making my husband's surprise birthday stay so complete. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and hope to return again ...and soon!

We 1st stayed here just over a year ago and enjoyed it enough to return, even though we had a few niggles the 1st time. The food was excellent, I think improved since we were last here. Still think at the prices charged a cooked breakfast should be included though. We ate once in the bar and once in the fine dining room. Choice was good and the food was really well cooked and presented. Some people have mentioned small portions but 3 courses was more than adequate. The room was a decent size, the wi-fi worked well and all was comfortable. If you are noise sensitive I would avoid room 4 as there are 2 rooms above this room and we seemed to have very heavy footed people above us. Everything was clean, the staff polite, attentive and pleasant. It's in a great location for visiting the south Peaks District. Although it is on a main road and we had a front room, the traffic could not be heard as double glazing good but I think in summer it could be noisy with windows open as no air con. A side or back room might be better.
It is not a cheap place to stay but it is relaxing for a short break and the food was great. Would we try it again, probably yes, for an autumn / winter break.

Room Tip: If noise sensitive, avoid those at front and under the 2nd flor rooms

This is the second time we have stayed at this lovely period hotel. A lovely warm welcome was given, luggage whisked away and refreshments offered. The room was spacious, tea and coffee is provided but you need to ring down for milk, which is brought up straight away. There are the usual slippers, gowns, etc expected of a hotel of this nature, and the toiletries provided are Aveda.
The bar is full of character, low ceilings, roaring fire, great service, although there was no bottled lager to increase the choices available.
We ate in the restaurant and the food was good quality, indespersed with delightful amuse-bouche. Although we were a loud party of six, there was no frowning by the staff at our slightly too loud banter, and no trying to rush us out of the restaurant when it was getting really late.
The bed and pillows were very comfortable, and with blackout curtains it would have been easy to lie in longer.
Breakfast was also really good, and they were happy to make changes to the menu provided. Again, we stayed longer than we should have, but were not rushed out. We then stayed on for coffees in the public areas, none of which were charged for.
If you are going to visit Chatsworth, get your tickets from reception as they are 20% discounted. It also has extensive fly fishing facilities, and tons of walks in the area.

We cannot recommend this hotel enough! We have just returned from a 2 night stay and could not have been more impressed! The location, the staff, the rooms and of course, the food!! Everything has been thought of and is run beautifully!
We were even allowed to bring our Labrador with us - thank you so much for putting up with him..... spoilt at the best of times!
We ate Dinner in the dining room both evenings and the food is a major attraction. (I have just finished my letter to The Good Food Guide - why ever is it not already listed??!!) Beautifully balanced and the flavours of each course wonderful! We were looked after by Jenni - the most gracious of hosts - and Laura who was also most charming. In fact every single member of staff went out of their way to ensure we were looked after. The walk that was recommended to us was from the hotel to Bakewell - it nearly finished me off but the Lab thought it was the best!! Great gardens in the Hotel too - most useful!!
We can't wait for an excuse to experience their hospitality again - the sooner the better. I urge you to go and try it for yourself - you won't be disappointed! Oh, and they even organised tickets to Chatsworth for us at a 20% reduction!! Go, go go!!
Thanks to all and see you soon.......xxx

Room Tip: Room 1 suited us to perfection!
