“Nice Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014

We stayed here for one night to celebrate my wife's birthday. We liked it. There are not many rooms so you get personal service from the staff, all of whom we found very friendly and helpful.
Our room was fine and quiet and it was good to have sky sports!
Dinner was very good but we were restricted for choice with no too much in the way of plain English food, particularly in the starters. Overall cost of our stay was on the pricey side but we knew that when we booked and it did have an exclusive feel to it so we are not complaining. Happy to recommend it.

We stayed two nights and ate dinner in the hotel both evenings. We found the staff ( who were all young) welcoming, pleasant and helpful. The food was consistently good.
Some of the decor is a little tired but the room was sizeable and well appointed with a comfortable bed. The hotel grounds were very well maintained and lovely. We felt the hotel offered good value.
There are a number of walking opportunities nearby. There is a very good route that takes in Bakewell, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth which you can do directly from the hotel. No need to drive.

My family and I have had a few afternoon teas here. We have had afternoon teas all over the country. This is the best by far and I include major London hotels in that. The attention to detail is amazing, the tastes and choices excellent. If you are anywhere near I can say I don't see how you could get better. Go there. The staff told me today that they have a new head chef, Christian Kent. I have eaten Christians food many times when he was at a restaurant in Sheffield and enjoyed everything he produced. They are lucky to have him.

We decided to try East Lodge for one night to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. First impressions on approach to the Hotel and grounds are pretty good and definitely geared up for wedding functions. If you are lucky with the weather on your big day that's certainly an added bonus because the gardens are fantastic for such an event. The hotel staff are very friendly and professional but the place itself is quite depressing. In my opinion the hotel requires some serious money spending to make it more appealing to all age groups. The hotel appears to lack any kind of atmosphere and is generally dull. If you want to have a drink at the bar unfortunately you have only Becks Vier to choose from otherwise it is the more expensive bottled beers. We decided to take our meal at 7:30. The menu is varied but we decided to go for Fillet Steak (£27 each) only to be informed that they had no fillet left. I found this quite bizarre considering it was only early evening with a small number of guests staying at the hotel that night. In fairness to the hotel we were given a complimentary bottle of wine which was much appreciated but it just seemed to knock the edge off our celebrations considering this was supposed to be a top notch hotel in relation to the food. Overall it just wasn't our cup of tea but that's just our opinion and at the end of the day and we all like different things in life...!

Blissful weather does tend to give most towns a shine. We stayed as a family party in this small hotel. We benefited from a summer special discount and took dinner bed and breakfast. The dinner was really excellent and we were fortunate to have a personal dining room. Beds were a little warm but weather was unusually hot. Lovely setting quiet and only a short drive from Sheffield. Quiet unusual outside coloured lights playing on a beautiful garden. Not to everyone's taste as would the Gardener starting work at eight sharp. We thought this might upset some guests.

Odd arrangement for TV and bathroom power switches. Hard to adjust the sky box cable. Odd to have tv in a bathroom but I'm sure someone might enjoy lying in a bath watching TV. Not my choice!

Breakfast was nice although cereals and fruit a little ordinary. Coffee a little routine. Might have been instant. Reception service a little slow and again perhaps could be a little better organised. Overall an enjoyable small hotel experience. Probably wouldn't have been happy to pay the full rate but summer special rate was reasonable.

We went 16th July to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. Our first impression was of a beautiful building set in stunning grounds. Strangely, there was noone at the first reception point, so we wandered some more before eventually being greeted.

Appetisers of green olives and beetroot/parsnip crisps arrived with our drinks. Whilst we perused the menu, the lack of sufficient background music made conversation feel a little awkward as other guests arrived. I chose a confit of salmon starter, with Hake as main course.

Taken through to the dining room, our waitress was very nice, she facilitated us moving to a window to enjoy the view. Warmed bread rolls were served unusually with Henderson's relish.

The starter was poor - a chunk of salmon on rather dry strips of courgette, garnished with some small capers and micro floral leaves. The lack of any dressing left the dish incomplete and bland.

For the main dishes, vegetables were ordered separately - it was puzzling how 3 small carrots and 3 asparagus stalks should be devided between us. The main course was unremarkable other than a very watery sauce and tiny shrimp sized langoustine.

So underwhelmed by the meal, we left without sampling a dessert.

At approximately £90 for two drinks and two uninspiring courses each - sadly, would not recommend.

Room Tip: As local people, we went only for a meal so cannot comment on the accommodation.

Spent 4 nights in this charming hotel on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate, a lovely part of the world. The hotel is maintained to a very high standard and the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The food in the restaurant was delicious as were the breakfasts . I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Lovely disabled room on ground floor with separate access straight to your own car parking space. Bi...
