Went for lunch as they do 3 courses with the main dish half size for £18. There is limited choice on this menu BUT the food is wonderful well deserving of its 3 rosettes. Even the deserts were heavenly.

“A Real Let Down”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

We were really looking forward to our meal here and I have to say we were very disappointed.
We had travelled quite a distance to enjoy a meal and were expecting more of a fine dining experience not a bland sunday lunch

On arrival we were greeted warmly and had a drink in the bar, which did not go with the atmosphere they are trying to create here, more of that later. The chairs were uncomfortable and cramped and it seemed more of a pub atmosphere rather than the exclusivity that
the prices are trying to suggest. We had the 3 course sunday lunch, the starter was fine ,heritage tomatoes with a goats cheese curd then it all seemed to go down hill. The main of pork, and some of us had the beef ,was bland, the vegetables were absolutely tasteless The dessert of strawberry parfait with egg custard , with dry biscuits flung on top was also bland and tasteless, all served by waiter/waitresses wearing white gloves! I am afraid the quality of the food does not match that kind of pretension.

The drinks were extraordinarily expensive for the quality, these prices I would expect to pay in a 5 star top London Hotel. The coffee ,was again tasteless and at £4.50 per person with chocolates ridiculously overpriced

On leaving and being asked if everything was OK I re iterated our disappointment to the receptionist " I will have a word with the chef" was the reply and that was it. No apology, nothing.

The experience cost £5 short of £200, for that sort of money I expect a lot better than this standard fare. Sorry to say, a real let down

Excellent food, heritage tomatoes and goats cheese curd, mussels cooked in bakewell best bitter with toasted treacle bread, pan fried sea trout and a to die for sundae. Excellent service, beautiful location. Not cheap but worth every penny.

“Excellent Sunday lunch”
Reviewed 11 August 2014 via mobile

First of all, please make sure you get the right Peacock! There's one in the middle of Bakewell and one up at Owler Bar, all within 10 miles of each other and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the reviews of the Bakewell Peacock were from people who dined here.

Anyway, lovely Sunday lunch! Turned up without a reservation to be offered a table in the bar, which was spot on. Don't let the uniformed staff put you off, sometimes that can be a recipe for stuffiness, you may begin with the feeling you might be underdressed for the occasion, but the truth is you're in very professional unpretentious hands so relax and enjoy. The food was lovely, chicken tender and moist with a fantastic smoked mash potato, I need the recipe, its sublime. The vegetarians in our group would have preferred another veggie option other than just the risotto, but they did all have the risotto and enjoyed it. Note this refers to the Sunday lunch deal not the main menu which obviously has more veggie choices. Great wine selection with bottles for all tastes and wallets. Puddings equally top notch - moist orange sponge and a trio of delicious ice creams (best vanilla ice cream I've ever had). A bit pricier than your average pub grub but totally worth the extra.

“Excellent menu, staff and dining experience”

The Peacock at Rowsley is my favourite place for lunch, it's like going back 60 years, to a time more elegant and respectful. The quality of the food is top of its class.
