“Disappointing”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

We decided to go to East Lodge as a special birthday celebration. We have been to eat here a number of times and have had some excellent meals. However on this occasion - the cuisine fell well short of the standard expected from an AA Three Rosette restaurant. Our starters were fine, but we ordered steaks for our main course and asked for the fillet (for which there was a £6.00 supplement) to be rare. It came out to us well-done, so it had to be returned. The chips were overcooked and very dark brown in colour. Both dishes were taken back to the kitchen, a new fillet and chips came back quickly - probably too quickly as the steak was extremely rare, so much so that it was lukewarm in the middle and the chips were just about cooked. At this stage life is too short to complain a second time. The dessert tasted fine, but the lemon tart was not set fully and was runny.

Full marks for the way the complaint was dealt with but all we ever want when we go out to dine is a good meal and a fuss free evening. So however good the service iswhen a dish has to be sent back, the evening is always spoiled.

We will go back to East Lodge, the staff are great and the surroundings beautiful but the food has got to be right - its not cheap dining.

“evening meal”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Recently, I was taken to East Lodge for an evening meal as a birthday treat. The main course was embarrassingly poor. The desert was much more acceptable, but, at £32 per person for a 2 course meal, it was vastly overpriced. Unfortunately I was the one who suggested we would have a special evening with good food at this venue. Very disappointing.

“Derbyshire Class”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

We were taken to lunch here by a friend in July this year. I have to say that we don't normally visit restaurants of this quality, being pensioners on a limited budget. Everything was of first class quality. The members of staff were friendly and helpul and not at all 'pushy'. The set meal looked rather expensive to us, so we opted for the cheaper alternative. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented. I thought my sweet looked a bit small when it arrived, but it was delightful and I was well satisfied. Wine was not cheap, but in surroundings such a these, this was to be expected. After eating, we wandered ariound the beautifully cared for garden which consisted of immaculate lawns, a lake, fountain and many beautiful flowers. A visit to remember.

“Wonderful special lunch”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

Excellent lunch and fantastic new chef. Took my 82 year old Mum for a formal birthday lunch here on a Tuesday. Couldn't have been a better experience. Food really delightful. Mackerel "blowtorched" with blackcurrants, pickled beetroot, excellent starter. Mains of turbot and lemon sole also superb. Dessert... to die for; one based around rhubarb (jelly, ice cream, poached) and the other a buttermilk pannacotta. Staff friendly and formal enough without being stuffy. Strolled in gorgeous gardens after lunch. Will definitely return.
