Mention this great river and it embodies Bath and Bristol, as well as numerous pretty villages. The river has seen trade for hundreds of years and is now the venue for all kinds of water sports, as it wends its' way to Avonmouth and the Bristol Channel.

Have just returned from a fantastic day out on a boat trip on the River Avon in Bath with "Penny Lane" which lasted 3 hours included was a 2 course meal for £39 for two people, the offer was with the Groupon site, not sure if they are going through Groupon again, but if not you can get all the info on their web site.

Will most cetainly go again as it was a fantastic day plus the weather was perfect.

On the plus side: it's really, really wet. I mean, the water actually flows up and down the river. It's tidal, y'see. And you can take a boat up and down it (the Bristol Packet, if memory serves). On the con side: well, it's a bit dirty and sometimes smelly, due to the exposed mud, due to the tidal nature of the river.

Overall, as rivers go, I give this river 5/5. God bless Bristol.

The river Avon stretches for miles and can be followed from the sea, through the Avon Gorge, under Brunel's Suspension Bridge, into Bristol city centre, and then out through the suburbs to Keynsham and Bath. The river is tidal in parts but the water levels are controlled at various parts to stop flooding when the tides are very high. The city centre parts of the river are bustling with small boats, ferries, and people walking and cycling, but from the city centre out through to Bath it is ideal for cycling, walking, fishing, and small boating, and in most places is a haven of peace and quiet.
