“Farty Towels”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

The hotel is split across the road. The older part forming the pub, restaurant and some olde worlde rooms and the other side houses the hotel reception and more rooms in a more modern construction. I arrived with four colleagues three of whom were housed in the olde worlde part and I had rather a reasonable room in the other. My room was clean and comfortable if a little cramped, apparently the olds worlde rooms were slightly more cramped. My bathroom and shower were good but shared a common feature with some of the others in that the taps were missing bits to turn and I had no shampoo or bath stuff - just liquid sap and hand cream. We decide to try the restaurant. The pub was quite and had a few local characters in for a pint. The food is decidedly unremarkable but our waitress was borderline Basil Fawlty. Very funny. The breakfast was very good. Would I stay there again? On business maybe but not on vacation.

“Waitress needs a course on customer service”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

This was the 3rd time we have visited the Bell for lunch on a Sunday, and the 3rd time we have had to deal with a very rude waitress. No thank you or 'was everything ok for you'.Waitress with the blond curly hair I think you need some personality lessons and a course on customer service! (The food was lovely by the way,but let down badly by the surly waitress!)

“good food poor waitress”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

We had not booked so we ate at the bar, as the restaurant was fully booked ,we ordered the pork belly with KALE , PEA'S AND BEAN'S and the mixed grill ,when the food arrived the waitress set it down no pleasantries no smile, the pork belly was served with carrots and broccoli which was over cooked, we asked for mint sauce and i forgot to order a peppercorn sauce so I ordered it. When the waitress returned with the sauce's we pointed out the veg's was not what it was on the menu , she went off an didn't return to tell us about the outcome of the question,by the time she did return with the correct veg my partner had finished the meal. This was the only down side to this meal, the pork belly was a good size portion beautifully cooked, and a buttery mash, the mixed grill was well presented tehe steak was cooked as ordered the chicken was moist and tasty a good favoured sausage and a gammon steak with egg ( which was runny which seems very hard for a chef to get right) , when we had finished our plate's were empty . Two waiting staff walked passed two or more time's and didn't lift our plate's, we would have had a dessert but as the plate's had not been removed we decided not to, as we got up our plate's were lifted. It might seem a small thing but it's a bugbear of our's. Very good food poor service ( definitely not sevice with a smile ) But in there defence the head barman took something off the total of our bill for the mix up ,which we thought was very fair.We will return as its not the chefs fault about the waiting staff

“Ok -but currently not the best Old English Inn we've stayed in!”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

We had a 2-night stay at The Bell.

Our room was pretty poor:-
There was a simple, wall-mounted electric heater that didn't work. We then noticed a small plug-in fan heater that also did not work on the highest setting -and was noisy on the low setting!
Since the duvet seemed quite lightweight we requested an additional one -and this was duly provided.
(We were particularly glad that the January weather was not too cold during our visit!).
There was only one mug with the tea/coffee facilities. Again, another was provided on request.

The room faced the road and was at times rather noisy -poorly fitted secondary glazing did little to reduce road noise.

Decor in our room was tired and somewhat strange too. For example, a 'feature wall' with classic designed wallpaper and matching curtains -but three totally out of character (colour, style) abstract wall pictures! (Indeed, nothing at all would have been better!)

Meals (including breakfast) across the road in the accompanying pub/restaurant were ok we felt -but again, we've experienced better examples previously in Old English Inns.
Other visitors however were overheard complaining that their breakfasts were cool -and not freshly cooked...

Deepak, the very new manager, did what he could to address the above shortfalls while we were there -and I think, in time, he will help to improve both the running of the place and the quality of the accommodation -providing some financial element is earmarked for necessary improvements.
