“Special deal = Excellent value”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

We can hardly complain after getting a double room with breakfast for £25 per night for the two of us. I'm not sure we would complain if we'd paid double that. The room was good, looked out onto the road but we didn't notice any excessive noise. Facilities were perfect for us. We ate in the restaurant on our first night and found the fare more than adequate, service was good as was the atmosphere. Breakfast was a highlight, excellent selection on the buffet counter of juices, cereals, pastries, fruit, yoghurt, etc. Cooked options were plentiful, couldn't fault it.
Hopefully we would have come to the same conclusion if we had paid more, will definitely be looking at other Old English deals!

Dear guest,
Thank-you for taking the time out of your day to shave your thoughts about our hotel. As a new team at the hotel, we do recognise that there are certain issues that need addressing. However, it delights me to say a training plan and hotel improvement plan has since been rolled out for both the team and hotel in order for improvements to be made. We do take all feedback seriously whether good or bad, as feedback like yours enables us to improve our offering for future guests. Rest assured your thoughts will be shared with the whole team.

Went for breakfast at the Bell on a Sunday morning with a friend, The restaurant side was busy with hotel guests and we were offered a table in the bar, exceptional value at 2 breakfast for around a tenner, this included continental buffet, full English breakfast and tea and coffee. To be honest for what it costs you could not make it yourself. The service was great, very friendly and the breakfast arrived soon after ordering as did the toast of which there was plenty. I would recommend to anyone visiting Woburn. Will certainly be back very soon for another.

Went to the Bell Hotel in Woburn on the off chance on Sunday Lunchtime, we knew it would be busy as it was mothers and we hadn't booked but if you don't ask you don't know.

From the minute we walked into the Bell and walked up to the bar we were made to feel very welcome by the young barman. He was serving at the time but acknowledged us immediately by saying that he would be with us shortly. He apologised for keeping us waiting ( which he didn’t ) and was extremely pleasant and polite to us. We asked him if there were any tables and he went into the restaurant to enquire, he returned within seconds and we were offered a table in the restaurant or in the bar. It was explained to us that the menu was the same. We opted for a table in the bar. We sat down and looked at the extensive menu and the specials on offer. We returned to the bar to place our order. The barman then took our food order at the bar, we sat at the table expecting the food to be a while as it was busy but the food was with us fairly quickly. The food itself was very good and exceptional value, we were very pleased. While we were eating the young barman waked past us to collect glasses and asked if everything was OK with our meal which we liked.

After we had eaten we returned to the bar area where there were a number of locals who were very chatty and friendly and we were served again by the young lad behind the bar, again polite asked us if everything was OK for us and seemed genuinely pleased that we had enjoyed our meal. When we finished our drinks we thanked the bar man who replied thank you, enjoy the rest of your day and we hope to see you soon.

Overall we were pleased that we chose to go in the Bell and will be returning.

I stayed here for two nights. Very small room, which was clean, but there was nowhere to hang clothes, other than some hooks by the door but no hangers. The shower had black mould on lower tiles, which I think should be attended to. The bed was comfortable with a nice duvet. The communal areas are nicely fitted out. I had breakfast in the restaurant, as well as having dinner one night. The food is adequate but only of the quality of a hotel/restaurant chain and wouldn't really recommend

We took advantage of Old English Inns winter deal, staying at The Bell last weekend. At £9.95 per person, including breakfast, this was too good to miss. We also ate dinner there on Friday evening.

The place is pretty much as described in other reviews, hotel and pub being on opposite sides of the road. Having never been to this area before I was surprised how busy the road was, especially with lorries although it did become quieter during the night.

Woburn is one horse town albeit a very pretty one and we had chosen to stay there as we wanted to visit RAF Duxford (excellent) and Bletchly Park (fascinating).

The pub and downstairs area in the hotel have been refurbished and are really nice, clean and warm. The bedrooms however leave something to be desired. Our friends room (31) at the back, was sunny and had a nice outlook and was quiet. Our room (32) was on the front and obviously got road noise which some people may find a problem, didn’t bother us though and we had the window open all the time. The rooms are tired, which ok, we weren’t bothered about. However, there is really no excuse for poor housekeeping. Both rooms seemed to be just superficially clean, the thick dust and muck behind the bedside cabinets was really unpleasant and also our room had a lingering odour which is why we kept the window open. I can honestly say that this is the muckiest room we’ve ever stayed in. I think that the room we were in needs a new mattress as we spent all night rolled together. That’s the negative stuff which I hope gets addressed as this place has much to offer.

The food wasn’t gourmet but was enjoyable and reasonably priced. Plenty of choice at breakfast, buffet for cereals and fruit, yoghurts etc., the full English was good.

Not sure if a previous reviewer caught the waitress on a bad day, we found her friendly and helpful as was Deepak the manager. I do wonder though why he isn’t having a spot check of the standard of cleaning in the bedrooms. I am always impressed when bar staff remember what you drank from the previous day, didn’t get his name but he was good too. Although the pub isn’t huge it was busy and there was a nice atmosphere, the outside seating would be nice in warmer weather.

Woburn has several shops and pubs, The Black Horse was packed both nights and Woburn Abbey is on the edge of the village. There’s also a Triumph dealer at the end of the village if you need to get a motorbike fix.

It’s such a shame that this hotel is being let down on something so basic. People will always want accommodation that is full of character and this place has it in spades.

Below is a copy of complaint I sent to The Bell on their contact us page:
I feel compelled to write to you after the dreadful experience that myself, my husband and my mother had at The Bell , Woburn on Sunday 2nd Feb. We had decided to go out for dinner and take our minds off the very distressing week we had had, losing my father. As you can imagine it took a lot for us to go out, but felt a change of scene may be better. We booked a table for about 5:30, and when we arrived I was surprised to see that ours was the only table reserved. To cut a long story short, they had run out of chicken wings, merlot, coleslaw just to start with from what we ordered. We all had duck spring rolls (I had wanted the chicken wings), then we all had 1/2 roast chicken, chips and coleslaw(which we were later informed they had ran out of coleslaw). When the waitress brought them to the table she literally dumped them and ran. We had no cutlery as we had used them for our starters, she did not ask if we required another drink or any sauces. It was the end of her shift and she just left. We eventually got the attention of another waiter, after my husband had gotten cutlery off another table, and we requested more drinks and mayonnaise, guess what? Yes that's right, they didn't have any mayonnaise, which made dinner very dry. My mum expressed her displeasure and we were offered free desserts or coffee, which none of us wanted, we just wanted to go home. When the final bill came they had deducted 20%, but this does not make up for the experience that we endured and added distress to an already very upsetting week. I can not imagine how a restaurant expects to run efficiently when they can't stock the basics on a menu, if they do run out then maybe they should let you know before you sit down so you can decide whether to stay or not. My husband and I used to eat at The Bell every weekend, but the last few visits have left us very disappointed and therefore we had not been for a while, our latest experience probably explains the lack of reserved tables and we definitely won't be returning.
2 weeks later I eventually received an email advising it was the wrong department and to send to another dept. I have sent same email to Greene King and I am yet to get a response.
