Stayed here for 2 nights as I was at the opera for a couple of performances. it couldn’t be much closer to the Hippodrome and the centre of town.
My room was the spacious 903 (9th floor) and there were good side views of the harbour area through the full length windows. The double bed was comfortable enough, didn’t use the air con so can’t comment on its effectiveness. There was a large flat screen tv, above a rather strange hard bench, which I assume was for luggage, though it was a bit narrow to open suitcases fully on. WiFi was easy to log in too and the signal was fine. There was a large wardrobe, only 3 small draws though. Inside the wardrobe was an easy to use safe with a internal light. The refreshment tray contained an uninspiring collection of beverages other than the tea. This is another hotel room without a central light fixture, so could appear a bit gloomy.
The bathroom was another example of style over practicality, a large mirror though of limited value as not well lit, tbf there was another mirror on a stand though. The sink was square and shallow, so not very practical. Everything worked though and the shower was powerful. So the room overall was perfectly satisfactory. However getting to and from it was a major issue. However getting to and from it was a major issue. One of the 2 lifts was out of action, though you did have the option of sharing the service elevator. I got the impression talking to staff that this situation would not be resolved quickly. In such a tall hotel this is a major problem, and there was much vexation and waiting round the lift area. Coming down towards the end of breakfast on the Friday morning I found the buffet to be very average with the exception of the bacon. A much better option is the omelettes or eggs benedict, enjoyed on the Saturday morning. There is a bean to cup coffee machine, which if your lucky may play Mozart when in action. Service was good in the dining room and reception, though check in took longer than one would expect. If you return late at night you can open the hotel entrance doors with your room card. So a decent hotel, reasonable value in a great city centre location.
