Everyone usually knows what to expect when booking a HI Express - cheap and cheerful.
I can't argue with the price at £54 per night with a decent location opposite Temple Meads Train Station and a complimentary breakfast (which now also includes bacon, sausage, scrambled egg and beans). The negatives were that the room was very dusty and if you get a room at the front of the hotel the traffic noise is pretty loud (seems to be a main route for ambulances getting to the hospital as heard loads of them). The hotel still offers some smoking rooms but what I found surprising was that we stayed on the 6th floor which was part non smoking and part smoking so if you are a non smoker I don't think you would like the smell in the corridors. Parking is only £6 per night which I didn't think was bad at all for the location.
Don't think of eating your evening meal here as it's a very limited choice of microwaved food and the prices seemed very high for the offerings (only things like nachos or chicago town frozen pizzas). There is a cash machine (that wasn't working) and a vending machine (that wasn't working). It's about a 10 minute walk to the harbourside which had some good bars and restaurants and Cabot Circus was about a 15 minute walk.
So ask for a room at the back of the hotel (the view wont be great but it will be quieter) and you can't go far wrong. Of course this isn't a luxury hotel, but you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: A room at the back of the hotel should be quieter. Does still offer smoking rooms.

Dear MB8113
We would like to thank you for posting a review to share with fellow travellers. Please accept my apologies that the 2 machines mentioned were not working during your stay. This has been reported to the suppliers and have been fixed. We have recently started to offer snacks such as Nachos and Pizzas to our customers so that in times of needing a snack or a simple meal due to arriving late at the hotel when all nearby restaurants have closed is rather handy. Once again thank you and we hope you will choose our hotel again on your next visit to Bristol.

I stayed here in August for the one night to break up a long trip with my children. The hotel was easy to find, located directly opposite Temple Meads train station. The parking is the real bug bear here. You have to pay an extra £6 to park inside a secure compound, which is not easy to navigate to or around!! Reception was clean and well presented, and the staff behind the desk were very friendly and helpful. We were allocated a room on the 2nd floor, and by all accounts the hotel was fully booked that night. The room had a disappointing feel about it. I have stayed in several holiday inns and this was some way short of their normal standards. The room was 'compact', although it was clean and fresh. There was no bath, only a shower, which was a pain as I have 2 small girls. There were only 2 sets of towels too, however some were quickly brought up when requested. There are the usual tea/coffee and a hair drier; but the room seemed overly 'budget' compared to the other holiday inns, even compared to the cheaper premier inns. In my own opinion, the rooms simply need freshening up, with new bathrooms! The breakfast in the morning, again, was disappointing. There is a selection, but only a small amount of fruit and cereals and a limited hot food option. It wouldnt take a lot to make it so much better. My kids are easy and will eat most anything, and thankfully they were more than happy with breakfast. Maybe I am just becoming too fussy!?

The best aspect of the hotel is the location. Directly opposite the train station, and directly on the main road through the city centre. It took us 20 mins to walk to Cabot circus to look at the shops, and to get some food.

Overall, holiday inn express Bristol, it was an average stay... You have very friendly, very helpful staff, but you must try harder!

Dear Ben P
Thank you for taking your time to post a review for our hotel. As mentioned, our hotel location is indeed very handy for public transport customers since we are directly opposite the train station and our close proximity to the heart of Bristol. We only have limited secure car parking spaces, however we have an agreed concession price of £2.50 from 6pm to 8am for our guests who choose to use the NCP parking instead. We are pleased to hear that we have delivered excellent customer service but at the same time, disappointed that our product has failed to meet your expectations. However, we do sincerely hope that you will choose to stay with us again on your next visit to Bristol.

We stayed at the hotel on 10/11 August 2012. Arrived a little early and were greeted by Katya on the reception desk. A really warm and friendly welcome – nothing was too much trouble and we were provided with advice on what to do and where to go in the city together with a user friendly map to help us find our way around. The friendly reception and helpfulness of the staff by far excelled that of previous hotels I have stayed at. The room was very clean and had the advantage of air conditioning. Unfortunately it was pretty noisy being next to a main road and opposite a mainline station – only to be expected. If you want peace and tranquillity perhaps you may wish to stay elsewhere but then you would miss out on the prime location and vibrant life of the city. The noise did not disturb me – the bed was excellent and I had a great nights sleep. The use of the free ice machine in the foyer also was a great bonus. Breakfast although very limited was good – plenty of it and set you up for the day. To sum it up, great staff – nothing was too much trouble – the welcome was first class. Great accommodation – clean, comfortable and great bed. Great breakfast and plenty of it. Great value for money – I will certainly use the hotel again

Great location close to train station. Although it is on a busy road, the soundproofing is good. Very helpful reception staff - especially the lady who investigated bus timetables, printed them out and brought them up to my room. Rooms and breakfast are what you would expect from HIE. If I was in Bristol again, I'd certainly consider staying here.

Stayed here the night before my son's university graduation. The location was perfect as it was directly oppostite the train station. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was great. The thing that stands out about my stay was the friendly lady at reception who welcomed us when we arrived, a genuinely warm person who chatted to us easily and made us feel very welcome. (sorry I can't remember her name - think she might have been a manager)). She was so helpful and allowed us to keep our luggage in storage whilst we attended the ceremony. We were then able to pick it up again on our way back to the station on the way home. The hotel is 5 mins walk away from some lovely bars and resturants and there is a bus stop right outside. Highly recommended and many thanks to the lovely lady if you happen to read this (you were telling us you have 2 young children).

I use this hotel quite regularly when in Bristol on business. Situated directly opposite Temple Meads station and a ten minute walk from the delights of the city centre the location is excellent. I have always found the staff to be friendly and attentive, the rooms are always very clean. There is some noise evident but given the hotels location this is to be expected. Breakfast is sufficient although the toasters are a bit of a pain. Always a hitel I look forward to revisiting. Definately not the Ritz but does what it says on the tin.
