Returned here after nearly 7 yrs and it's still lovely. Building is beautiful and staff are fab, very warm and approachable. Great location, night life very near by but couldn't hear any noise from our room, perfect.

Room Tip: Staff can advise which rooms are away from any noise from the pubs / bars etc

The Royal was brought back from total dereliction and greatly extended some 20 - 25 years ago. And it shows - both in good ways and bad ways. The good news is that bedrooms are modern, air conditioned and spacious. The bad news is that some quite fundamental parts of the hotel are getting to the point where a refurb is urgently needed.

You shouldn't be too concerned about this - everything works, and everything is clean. But the lifts groan a bit, and at some point have been cleaned with something that took the gloss off from the finish. If our bathroom was typical, then everything was clean and worked fine - but the edge of the bath was coming loose, and the marble worktop was cracked. And since much of the building dates from the late twentieth century, these problems don't add character as they might in an older building - they just feel annoying.

So why the four points for the overall rating? Because the service provided is very good. You are made to feel welcome, and the service is fully professional in every way. The furnishings are good, with possibly the best towels I have ever had in a hotel. Breakfast is excellent - but pricy if not included in your package.

And the packages - that's possibly another negative. It would seem that Marriott are keen to offer something for everyone. So keen, in fact, that the reception staff get a little confused, telling us in the first place that our booking did not include breakfast. We pointed out that it did: they checked the system, and agreed with us, so no problem at all. But possibly Marriott are trying to offer too wide a range of rates and tariffs?

And where the Royal really scores is in its position. Next to the cathedral, at the bottom of Park Street and just above the Centre, most of Bristol's entertainment venues are in easy walking distance. The double glazing (sealed so you do need the aircon) keeps out almost all the noise - we could hear steam train whistles from the dock (tourist) railway and some shouts late at night, but not the peal of Glasgow being rung at the cathedral.

A good place to stay. As long as you can be a little tolerant of wear and tear.

Stayed for one night in August. Rooms are a bit pricey - we paid £139.00 for B &B. The room was on the 4th floor with a lovely view of the Cathedral. Only one problem, there was only a tiny picture window in the room and that had been sealed shut. Made it a little claustrophobic. Apart from that the room was well furnishedand the bed was sooo comfy.
The public rooms are nice if a little old fashioned but I must say I don't like the fact that the hotel allows fancy dress stag parties to use the bars in the evening. Also the champagne bar had football on the television, didn't seem to be in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Overall, would stay again if in the area.

Stayed here for 2 nights with children in a double room with two king size beds. Room was lovely, clean and the beds were so comfy. Staff professional, friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was excellent, full english and continental, so many choices available. We also had evening meal in the hotel included in the rate for one night which was very good. Room service food was very good and quick especially the kids meal option is very good value.

There is an indoor swimming pool which is free for hotel guests to use. The facility is excellent and clean with helpful staff.

The hotel's location is excellent as it is walking distance to shops and amenities.

Great hotel for a weekend away in the city of Bristol, recommended.

I visit Bristol a few times a year and after staying in a couple of other hotels varying from a travel lodge upwards I now always book the Marriott Royal.

The location is excellent, right at the bottom of Park Street, leading up to Clifton (nice area for drinks/food in the evening - bit more up market than the centre of town). It is next to the cathedral and the waterfront is a few steps away. The centre of town is walkable with plenty of bars and restaurants and is literally a minutes walk from the Hippodrome theatre.

The staff are always excellent, we called the hotel on the way to see if there was any chance we could get a slightly earlier check in as we had our baby with us. Whilst on the phone we were offered an upgraded room at the cost of £50 per night that was guaranteed for an early check in (good selling). We were offered the option to use our points to "pay" for the upgrade and as we have been collecting marriott points for a while but have never actually "spent" them we decided to go for it. Indeed the room was available when we arrived and they had also included a bottle of wine for us too.

The room was very spacious, small entrance area with large wardrobe, large bathroom with separate shower cubicle and jacuzzi style bath, sofa/seating area, then the usual TV/desk area and large bed. The room also had a decorative ceiling (I have tried to included some pictures with this) and although didnt have a view as such it was a really nice room.

Parking is under the hotel, you can get a lift or stairs to the main lobby floor then larger lifts up to the rooms. I think it was around £12.50 ish per day to park but being the centre of Bristol I dont think you would get much cheaper without having a walk with your luggage. Reception basically validate your parking card so you can come in and out as you please and so far have never had a problem with finding spaces as there are quite a few levels.

The breakfast is very good, plenty to choose from, fruits, yoghurts, toast, cakes/pasteries and of course a full english.

The hotel is in a very nice building and so far all of the rooms I have stayed in have been in excellent condition, very clean and comfortable. If you are able to book in advance you can usually get some good deals or packages via the hotels website. I am looking forward to our next stay in December!

We were so impressed with this hotel - and with Bristol as a place to spend a short break.

The location is perfect, couldn't be better - right beside the cathedral and only steps away from the waterfront and all the attractions there. The old town is also just a very short walk away. There are lots and lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity - recommend Bordeaux Quay and Spyglass BBQ.

The reception area is extremely elegant - old fashioned style and beautiful furnishings. There are 2 drawing room areas to relax, a lovely bar and a most impressive restaurant. Staff are second to none - from the receptionist to the cleaning ladies, all were marvellous and so friendly.

We had a family room - again exceptional. It was very large, two extemely comfortable queen sized beds, decor of the room was beautiful. The bathroom had a corner style bath which was a little small, but that is being picky. There were lots of fluffy white towels.

The pool area is very nice, but was rather busy when we used it. We have a child and felt we were disturbing people who wanted to do serious swimming, so not really great for families.

We did not eat in the hotel - there are so many excellent restaurants nearby and we wanted to explore the city. Breakfast was also not included in our room rate, our son does not eat a lot and we thought it was a bit pricey, so went to the Tesco shop just across the road each morning where we bought fresh fruit, croissants and pain au chocolats and made coffee in the room. It was perfect for us.

There is a car park under the hotel - we used that and it was very convenient. Parking in Bristol would otherwise have been a nightmare.

We loved this hotel, will use it again next year as a stopover on our way to the West Country and area already looking forward to exploring more of the wonderful city of Bristol and its attractions.
