“Top End of Marriott's in UK. Most comfortable beds I've found in Bristol so far”
Reviewed 14 August 2009

I have chosen this as my preffered hotel for Business stays in Bristol. As long as you avoid lower rooms facing the side of the building adjacant to Harbour Road (which have poor sound proofing and suffer traffic and nightclub noise) this hotel is as comfortable as it gets in Bristol. The beds knock me out like a light until the alarm. Food is of reasonably good quality and amenities meet the 4* billing. Staff always appear to put you first. Room service took 55 minutes this week and whilst I had to prompt them for the 'free if later than 45 mins promise', once reminded, I received a free meal!
I do recommend the hotel.

Husband and I checked into this hotel in July 2009 for just one night. It was our first hotel stay without children in 14 years so we thought we would push the boat out and go for the very 'grand' looking Marriot Royal. Being regular visitors to Marriot hotels for many years with our children (mainly at Slough Windsor Marriot, Gatwick Marriot Renaissance and Portsmouth Marriot) we were expecting this one to be special... oh dear... special it certainly was not!!! Although we had asked for a room with a view over college green, we got a very dingy, scruffy room overlooking other sides of the hotel, the furniture was old and tatty with odd fittings. The decor was tired and the carpets were worn out. The room itself was quite dark and we found it to be a little depressing. As we had specifically asked for a room with a view, we politely asked reception if we could move and they obliged without fuss. That day we went down to the pool (which looks fabulous in photos) and were looking forward to a relaxing swim and sauna.Pool was ok, again a bit tired and shabby in places, but ok. The steam room on the other hand was absolutely disgusting...I sat down on the seat and put my hands behind me... the back of the seat was covered in filthy, green slime! The walls in the steam room reminded me of a public toilet and the stench of mould was overpowering. Needless to say, we got out of there pretty swiflty! Our 2nd room was more pleasant than the first, the bed was comfortable and we were not disturbed by other guests at the hotel. Air conditioning was not working, but this was not a problem as it was not hot that night! Breakfast (always our favourite bit) was terrible - certainly not worthy of circa £16.50 price tag! the food was cold and we had to wait ages for stock replenishment, staff were not particularly friendly or attentive. Again, the dining room was dingy and really is in desperate need of refurbishment. Overall, I would say that this was the shabbiest, most disappointing Marriot we have ever stayed at. What makes it even sadder is that I was born in Bristol, it is my home town and I would much rather be telling people that this is the best place to stay when you visit my great town... This Marriot really does need an overhaul and a reality check!

Got a great deal of last minute site for our wedding anniversary as a stop over on our way to Cornwall. As soon as we stepped in lobby/reception we were overawed by beauty and calmness of hotel. Staff where amazing and helpful right through from reception, maintainance, pool staff and housekeeping and made us feeel welcome. Room was great with view of College Green, we loved swimming pool. Great location as lots of attractions nearby, saw Banksy exhibition at Museum which was worth queuing for. Prices in hotel where ok too, had lunch in clubroom and drinks in champagne bar loved the pictures of the Cary Grant & other stars in there. Also handy to have reduced rate parking in hotel underground car park. We also had a great time and loved Bristol can't wait to go back.

Visited for the weekend via train from East Kent with family (children 5 and 7) - hotel located near the waterfront, plus plenty of restaurants, and the museum (crucial as we went to Bristol to see Banksy versus the Museum!). It is also very near the explore@bristol attraction, which is fantastic - we spent hours in there on the Saturday, only left because it was closing! The hotel itself was lovely - nice big family room, nice bathroom, good aircon. We were at the front so some noise at night but not too loud, more of a background noise now and then - and we rather enjoyed people-watching!

The leisure club great, especially the pool and the best jacuzzi I have been to in a hotel facility. Staff were very helpful, we arrived to find travelocity hadn't told them it was a family booking so they quickly found us a new room despite being a busy weekend. Breakfast excellent (didn't eat in the evenings as many restaurants nearby). The bar was nice, though! Again, nice staff.

This is the first time I have stayed in a Marriott in the UK, and will be looking to do so again. The staff couldn't do enough to help. Excellent!

This stylish and rather grand hotel is in a tremendous location from which to explore Bristol’s great centre. The underground parking is convenient and the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. (Shame the lifts are not as efficient, they are painfully slow and given that the hotel was very well occupied it could take an eternity to get from one floor to another)

Our spacious junior suite overlooking the Cathedral was on a dinner bed and breakfast basis which represented excellent value for money. The room is a interesting shape, almost hexagonal with several windows, such a pleasing change from staying in the usual ‘box’ type room. The décor is pleasant and the bed delightfully comfortable. Somehow though these days I would expect a decent coffee maker and flat screen TV in this type of room? Not quite too sure the set-up with the mini bar is what most clients want, but given Bristol’s magnetism for stag and hen functions, I can probably appreciate why they have such an ordering system utilised in the rooms.
The large bathroom has copious amounts of marble and glass, providing a luxurious ambience, though overall the lighting was rather dim and poorly designed for everyday use.
A complimentary bottle of some very nice wine was a thoughtful touch as were the various magazines.
Staff in the champagne bar were either very poorly trained or sadly lacked experience. Though the cocktail list was not extensive, two different bar staff were perplexed what the ingredients were when asked, that said they were pleasant enough and soon found out. Those in the sumptuously decorated palm restaurant were much better. Bert, one of staff there is going to have a very accomplished career in the hotel/restaurant business, his attention to detail and customer service is exemplary. The food too was excellent and our compliments go to the hotel for creating a great place in which to dine.
The breakfast buffet is adequate, though the system with cooking eggs on request is not working especially given that the hotel was so busy. Also the staff at breakfast could be taught a lot from Bert, as indeed of course could those running the Champagne bar!
I agree with several other reviewers that you do need to choose your room wisely. Bristol does not sleep or at least its drunken revellers do not. The hotel may also need to decide on what clientele it wants to attract. A large group of drunken men in the Champagne bar (drinking beer!) using bad language did not mix well with some of the other guests who are probably paying premium prices to stay here. Tracksuits and football shirts next to dinner dresses and black tie was an interesting mix!
All said and done we really enjoyed our stay here and would absolutely recommend it to anyone else. Do expect mixed service complimenting the hotels excellent surroundings and food but be prepared for probably not much peace and quiet on a weekend.

We loved this hotel and had a wonderful stay last time so returned for a long weekend but needed the rest of the week to recover! The attention to detail was just not there. The sky tv would keep threatening to go into standby mode, the ice machines have vanished, the mini-bars in the rooms are empty, rusting & unloved - one of ours was hot to the touch and is probably an electrical accident waiting to happen. Even trying to get an espresso at the bar was hard work - quicker and easier to walk up Park Street.
Requested, and had, a quiet room, which is a mercy at the Royal at weekends, but unfortunately the bed was extremely uncomfortable. In my experience this is unheard of at a Marriott, so, early morning requested a room change. The girl at reception assured me that this would be no problem later that day, so, upon our return to the hotel that afternoon we were moved to another 'quiet' (internal courtyard) room. No bathrobes available. The room smelled of steak being cooked and the air conditioning didn't work but there was an ineffectual desk-top fan in the wardrobe. Complained about the hot smelly room but was told that by this time in the afternoon, there were no other rooms available and an industrial strength & size heavy duty fan was produced. So much for 4 star luxury. Then whilst trying to sleep we were kept awake by constant banging from below. It turned out that our room was above the function room ladies' lavatories. Several hours of slam, slam, slam, and being fobbed off by the "At Your Service" team we were finally seen by a duty manger and at 1.15am were given the ground floor junior suite. This hadn't been fully cleaned after the previous guests; the double glazing wouldn't properly close, so lorries were audible at the outside traffic lights at 5am; the bath water would only run at a lukewarm temperature unless the separate shower was put on at the same time. Bizarre. I could go on and on, listing problems. Suffice to say I would go elsewhere at a weekend.
