“Old but Charming”

A great hotel with a stunning view of the Gorge. I was lucky to get a room overlooking the bridge which was an extra.
Rooms are large but a little outdated but, then again, the whole building is old. Loved the worldly charm of this hotel.

Beautiful setting with a stunning terrace.

In urgent need of refurbishment as the rooms were so tired are in need of some urgent attention.

Parking is limited and not very convenient,

A decent investment would make this hotel a winner.

The hotel's location overlooking the Avon Gorge is wonderful, the views are fantastic. It's just a 5 minute walk away from the charms of Clifton village.
The hotel itself was a disappointment, it's tired and need a renovation. The lift was our of order the day we arrived and the day we departed, that said , the reception did kindly send someone to carry our suitcases up to our room. The room was ample with 3 large windows overlooking the Gorge which was great but it was very hot and only 2 of the windows opened a few inches . Idem in the bathroom and the heated towel rail was on full blast and we couldn't turn it off. There was a ceiling fan but the switch to operate it was faulty. The reception and maintenance men did there best to make us more comfortable by bringing us a portable fan. We were told that the hotel was in the process of a renovation but unfortunately we weren't given one of those rooms.
The breakfast choice was extensive and good quality and it was nice to eat breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Gorge. The reception staff were helpful and the breakfast staff were rushed and serious.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room.

This is a nice hotel and well positioned with a lovely terrace providing nice views of the gorge and the suspension bridge, however the room we were given (room 126) was a little outdated and the ceiling fan was broken and only had 3 impellors which rendered it inoperative if not dangerous when it was turned on. Our room was alongside the kitchen extractor fan system so unable to leave window open due to noise, therefore during the warm weather the night was very uncomfortable. Shower controls were very temperamental and difficult to operate/set. Not many other problems but considering the cost of this hotel (in excess of £100), I expected it to be somewhat better, I have stayed in a lot better hotels for a lot lower price.

This hotel has an unbeatable position and sitting out on the terrace with a beer (the White Lion bar keeps a 5* pint of Butcombe) is a pleasure.

The staff are great and very eager to help guests.

The room was very clean and tidy and housekeeping did a good job.

I would have left 5* but, and here it comes, during the heat wave of 12-15 July the rooms were pretty unbearable. We were in formed by the reception that because it is a listed building installing air-conditioning isn't possible. We accepted this at face value but, I'm pretty sure that this only applies to externals and infrastructure can be modernised regardless (and indeed the rooms and public areas are currently undergoing a major refurb with the public areas having AC

Lovely hotel in an enviable position and staff were friendly and helpful. I understand the limitations of the building mean that air conditioning isn't possible but in a heatwave its just about intolerable. The position means the sun beats down all day and with windows (understandably) only opening a few inches its a sauna at night. If the weather is cooler then I'm sure its a great stay but if you object to 30o+ temperatures at night, avoid in a heatwave!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a fan.
