“A classically worn beauty”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

Stayed here for one night only and whilst the lift and outside could do with a lick of paint, the rooms have been refurbished and are very good and adequately appointed.

Booking over the phone was a good experience with the friendly and helpful receptionist (Martha).

On arrival ( late arrival ) the staff were very helpful, providing sandwiches and drinks and nothing seemed to be a problem.

Breakfast was excellent and I normally don't like buffet style, good selection of full English, fruit , cereals etc. The views from the dining room are beautiful.

All in all a very good hotel with excellent staff

Room Tip: Opt for a room on 1-2 or 3rd floor facing the bridge, the rooms are quiet and the sleep quality was...

The hotel is a very old building and is structured typically for this type with long corridors and steps inside leading to the rooms. This is not really suitable for anyone in a wheelchair. The reception was very bright and the staff extremely hospitable and helpful. The rooms we had were spacious, very clean with all modern facilities in an en-suite layout. There was a good sized flat screen TV with lots of channels and the bath/shower was excellent. We ate there and the food was good, a reasonable choice and presented well. Again the staff were very nice. There is a great view of the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge from the restaurant and all rooms with an even number. In the summer they have a splendid outside deck where you can eat, drink or just relax with the bridge in full close up view.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the bridge, choose a room with an even number. Odd numbers face the other way...

We made a last minute decision to book here to attend our sons birthday celebrations nearby. We managed to get a space in the car park but be warned, it is a bit tricky exiting as narrow and steep. Check in was efficient and friendly. Our double room was very good, spotlessly clean and spacious. Good bathroom facilities and again, spotless. We had a view over the village which was very pleasant. There was a private function going on but we didn't hear any noise from the disco and, even having the windows open in our room, we weren't disturbed by any outside noise. Breakfast was very good with a variety of cereals, fruits, pastries and a hot buffet option. Tea/coffee and toast was brought to the table. Very efficient and friendly staff. Would stay here again without hesitation.

Booked hotel for two night stay while attending a family wedding. Paid extra for a gorge view room. It could be argued that we could see the gorge if we peered through the high bushes,or we could see the bridge if we stood in the window and looked sidewise! On the first morning our ordered tea and coffee did not appear, all around were getting theirs,we had to ask again. A nearby couple were asked what they wanted before they sat down! Otherwise room was fine, clean and quite spacious, but there was no spare loo roll ,small detail but could be necessary.

Room Tip: If you want a gorge view ask if you can actually see it

Booked this hotel after seeing it featured in Michael Portillo’s “Great Railway Journeys” series. The location of this hotel is superb, being close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge and overlooking the Avon Gorge, with the old Observatory not far away. Our room (322) had a good view of the bridge, was very comfortable and warm (we turned the radiator off eventually). It was very windy the day we booked in, but the secondary double glazing in our room coped well; there were no draughts. We enjoyed the food in the hotel (dinner and breakfast both in the Bridge Café, with window tables looking out to the bridge and gorge), although wine and other drinks were, to our minds, overpriced. The large terrace would be an attractive location to spend a few hours in the summer. The staff that we met could not be faulted. The car park is narrow, not large and on a hill, with, unfortunately, no rear entrance into the hotel, so wheeled bags are a must. Overall, we would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay.

Room Tip: We had a third floor room with a "bridge view".

The location of this hotel, adjacent to the Clifton Suspension bridge and overlooking the Avon Gorge and with very easy walking distance of the centre of Clifton are without doubt it's outstanding features. The building is an old building and obviously very expensive to maintain. Although some major improvements have been made, the hotel still lacks some basic amenities, such as heating in the bathrooms and no extractor fans in the bathrooms. The primitive double glazing in the bedroom was totally inadequate and the lift that was next to our bedroom made a lot of noise and was disturbing. However the staff that we met were charming and went out of their way to be helpful. The food that we enjoyed in the hotel was more than adequate and the breakfasts were particularly good. The price of the hotel reflected the quality of the hotel.

Room Tip: Take a room overlooking the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The views are outstanding. Make sure you have...
