After a 4 hr drive in driving rain all I wanted to do was kick off my shoes and relax. Alas...when I opened the door to Mews 3 it was a cold clinical room. The floor is tiled - very cold, no rugs. The walls are white, all white, no pictures even the TV border (only thing on wall) is white, chair is white, & the bedding (you've guessed it) is white. Overall impression is cold, clincal and unwelcoming. Shame as actually the value is good, size of room is good and bed is comfortable. Even the noise is not too bad though it is evident especially from above. Sorry but I prefer a carpet (or wood) floor. Both for comfort and acoustics.

The overarching impression of this place for me was that the owner/manager was quite the most responsive/helpful/charming owner/manager I have ever come across. I sort of guessed this would be the case from his reply to the perfectly fair review below. Not the merest scintilla of defensiveness (unlike so many other managemnt replies on this site!!) just the undertaking to do something about it and given that we had total peace and quiet from start to finish I think he must have done (although we were not in room 3!)

The room was simple and immaculately clean and tidy, the bed comfortable, the lighting was fantastic (why are so many hotel/b&b rooms so dim???), the in-room continental breakfast spot on. The bathroom was much like you would get in a cabin on a large ferry, so tiny with no real separation between the shower and the rest of it but perfectly fine. In fact the shower was running tepid but Steve corrected this as soon as we told him (we were out at the time) and texted us to say that he had done so.

The only quibble is that the accommodation really is too small for double occupancy. We kind of had to take it in turns to walk about and one side of the bed was against the wall. We were here literally on a sleepover so it was manageable, but I don't think we would consider staying again as a couple. However as there is a discount for single occupancy it then becomes a really stonking deal and I would not hesitate to stay here if travelling alone. The 5pm check in did not bother us and we had not intended arriving before then anyway but Steve had texted us mid morning to say the room was ready.

Room Tip: Stay alone if you can!

The Ferndale Mews concept is meant to be a simplistic B&B at an affordable price.

There are 3 double rooms, 2 of which are at the rear however Room 3 is at adjacent to the entrance and the communal kitchen area.

This is where the concept fails as the room is only separated by a thin partition wall from the area where other guests will be talking, making hot drinks, having breakfast etc. With the kitchen and Room 3 both having tiled floors none of the noise created is absorbed and therefore either keeps you awake or wakes you up.

Our experience was that other quests were making hot drinks late at night so woke us up, and then had breakfast at 6am and we were subjected to their burping, swearing and constant clattering of cutlery and crockery.

Additionally the noise from the creaking floors above is excessive. This is presumably from the owners walking about upstairs and perhaps unaware of the noise being created.

Therefore in order to get a good nights sleep you are reliant on a number of factors; 1. Other guests returning to their rooms at a reasonable time and not using the kitchen. 2. Other guests not having an early breakfast. 3. The owners not walking about above you.
Of course none of this is within your control!

Disappointingly the check in time is an exceptionally late 5pm. I did negotiate a 4pm check in however was made to feel that I had been done a favour.

Positively the rooms are clean and there is nothing wrong with the breakfast, and if you were in the other rooms you are less likely to be impacted by the issues described above.

So, if you do book Ferndale Mews avoid Room 3!

Management response:Responded 30 August 2011

It is of great concern to us that a guest has been less than happy with their stay with us, but their comments do indeed raise some important and valid points with regard to this one room which we will correct.

Thankfully, we do not suffer from creaking floor boards upstairs but did have a horrendously squeaky door, now of course, oiled and silent. That was an inexcusable oversight. In fact the ceiling of this room is an air tight acoustic metal framed ceiling consisting of 30mm high density plasterboard suspended on acoustic hangers lined with an Acoustic quilt. Likewise the partition is of staggered independent (I) section metal studs, quilted, with Fireboard and Soundbloc board. However, as our guest suggests the performance is degraded by the door onto the kitchen area.

We have been balancing the benefits of providing a kitchen area for some time and the feedback of our guests in this instance has convinced us that this area is a detraction. So we are making plans to remove this and provide in room facilities.

Further, the entrance will be carpeted which allows us to fit an acoustic threshold seal to the base of the door, which is a heavy fire door. We will provide a progress report on our website and test the room as the work progresses.

At the moment our normal default Check-in time is 5pm. We do most of the house keeping ourselves so the rooms are often ready earlier and with a little notice, we do try to accommodate guests’ requests.

We’d like to apologise to our guests for their unhappy stay with us on this occasion, and to thank them for their feedback to help us improve our business. We value constructive criticism and wish to extend a warm welcome should they wish to return and examine our improvements to this room upon completion.

I booked a room at Ferndale Mews for my niece and her partner for a one night stay. We were having a family party nearby and couldn't squeeze all our overnight guests into our house. As we live nearby Steve, the owner, suggested that I come and view the rooms before booking. They were lovely - bedrooms and bathrooms contemporary and spotlessly clean. Three standard rooms accessed from the ourside and three larger ones with a shared kitchen area. Door codes were texted to us so that we could access the premises the next day. Plenty of parking nearby as Ferndale Mews is in a quiet residential area. This is a 'self service' establishment without reception, lounge or breakfast service. A substantial and very good quality continental breakfast is provided to have 'as and when'. This may not suit everyone but it is just what we wanted.

This B&B makes no false claims but the promise of clean, no frills accommodation at a good price was very appealing after staying in a couple of over-priced, over-rated B&B in Bristol.
The first good thing about Ferndale was the booking process - it was simple. The next was our arrival - that was simple too as I was texted key codes so it didn't matter when we arrived. We didn't have to worry about breakfast orders either - continental breakfasts were provided in our own kitchenette.
Then there is the ensuite wet room which was spotless. The sheets were clean & crisp, the bed comfortable, the room small but perfectly formed.
Ferndale Mews provides wholly adequate accommodation with no false promises. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Bristol when alone, or with my partner, for the odd night or two.
