I went to Bristol with a colleague on a course and stayed at The Washington Hotel for 1 night. We were provided with excellent customer service and the hotel was good value for money. The twin room had good facilities and the beds were very comfortable. Properly the only criticism was the shower temperature did not remain at a constant temperature.

The breakfast next day had a good selection and was well cooked.

The staff at this Hotel are very helpful and pleasant and the breakfast was excellent. Unfortunately everything else is terrible. The small towels, though clean, had very little if any pile left on them. When the bath taps were turned on the showerhead sprayed me, the wall and the floor. I thought there was a large cockroach on the bathroom floor but on closer inspection it turned out to be an unsightly burn in the lino.
The beds were so old and creaky that any movement woke you up, then the floorboards creaked even louder and woke my husband up. The bed linen was clean but so old it was almost threadbare. Our basement room was so tiny we kept bumping into each other and the dingy looking net curtain only just obscured an unattractive view of the basesment fire escape below the road.
Parking, although available, was tricky and cost extra. The number of stairs we had to climb up and down to get to our room was horrendous.
This sort of accommodation might be OK for impoverished and athletic students but we found it difficult and unpleasant and quite the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. How they manage to keep such good staff is beyond me.

WashingtonManager, Manager at The Washington, responded to this reviewResponded 16 November 2011

I am extremely sorry that this reviewer's experience of the Washington was not a wholly positive one - this is not the feedback that any of of the team here would like to hear as as the reviewer points out, every team member is very tuned in to making every guests' stay an enjoyable one. It is also very unusual for any guest to leave here without having had a good stay, a quick glance at previous reviews will attest to that.

I would like to address a couple of the points that this reviewer has brought up. We have fresh bed linen and towels delivered to us on a daily basis. The bath towels are bath sheet size and previous to this review we have only had positive feedback about the quality of the products that are available for guest use. It would appear that in this instance, the quality was not up to the mark, so I have had a conversation with both my House Manager and our laundry supplier to make sure we are being more vigilant in this area.

We are a Grade 2 listed building so are battling the elements a bit with our decor, but we have an ongoing rolling refurbishment so am confident that whilst this room may have been below par, we are addressing any areas where we currently underperform. We do not have a lift in the Guest House so there are a few staircases that need to be tackled, but the staff here are more than willling to help with luggage and will allocate a ground floor room should stairs be a problem for any guest. I would advise any future guests to let us know prior to arrival so we can make the necessary arrangements for you.

We do also have a car park on site which is available for guest use at a small charge. Unfortunately we are unable to control where other locals park on the streets outside our car park, but again, are more than happy to come out and guide any cars in if they are having difficulties.

I would like to, once again, apologise for the stay that this reviewer had - it is clear that in this case we did not exceed their expectations as we would wish to do and for that I am very sorry. I would love the opportunity to talk to you in more detail in person - if you would also like this please call the Guest House and ask for the Manager. I do also hope that any future guests reading this review will take into account the many other more positive reviews that have been posted before making their decision.
Many thanks

When we have been there, we got a room down in basement right next to the breakfast room. Room was small, twin beds, the furniture old, the room door worked only from outside, but didn´t go open from inside (the receptionist-man, fixed that with a little "kick"). The kitchen stuff was a bit loud in the early morning (woke us up at half five). Don´t know about other rooms. But the facilities in the room were good - nice tea, nice coffee, chocolate, fresh fruit etc. Breakfast is nice - a little buffet table and cooked breakf. The value for price is ok

Great value for money, clean, easy to find and park. Check in was quick and efficient and the room was entirely adequate [if needed a little updating]. The location was great, we walked into the city reasonably quickly and there were pubs and restaurants very closeby. Breakfast was good. Perfect for our needs.

This is a typical city hotel with adequate but not overlarge rooms and, being an old building, could do with some refurbishment. However, having said this four of us had a lovely short break at this hotel. The location is ideal, being within walking distance of the city centre and the harbour as well as Clifton village centre and the Downs. The hotel room was clean and had a well stocked hospitality tray with fresh fruit in the room on each day we stayed there.
The cooked and continental breakfasts were excellent, but the best thing about the hotel was the staff's attitude. From the reception staff to the waitresses at breakfast they could not have been more pleasant and helpful. Parking can be a problem in Bristol so the small car park at the rear is well worth it at £6 per night. We wouldn't hesitate to go back there when visiting Bristol again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back may be quieter as that is where ours was. Front ones are on a fairly busy road.

the only thing i would say is the windows could be done with being updated for double glazing. they did not look there best. the outside noise but i was staying fri-mon.
excellent location bus stops just 1 minute away for city centre and 3 minutes at the victoria rooms for the sightseeing bus and also for city centre.clean well presented & friendly helpful staff. the breakfast was better than expected you had a choice of a cooked b/fast or cereals, fruit, yougarts and usual fruit & hot drinks or the lot. not like some others when there is no choice you pick one or the other. i would recommend to others

Room Tip: if you like the quiet request a south side room if you are a weekend visitor.
