“Best pub in Clifton”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2014 via mobile

Used to live in the area and the atmosphere in a lot of the pubs had changed significantly over recent years; this one for the better. Excellent selection of real ales in cask, keg or bottle. Alongside a range owned by their parent brewer (Dawkins) they normally have some interesting guests on cask and something special on keg (Nøgne Ø on two occasions). A must for hopheads.

“Beer-lovers' gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

Tucked away, fantastic little beer bar. Rotating 5/6 ales/ stouts on cask, plus a host of others in bottles. Very knowledgable and welcoming young manager, Joseph, who even let us have some of a special Nogne Ol bottle he had been saving for a special occassion. Looking forward to my next trip.

“Great pub, good beer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2014

Good selection of beer, with a rotation on taps so there is usually something new to try. Recommend the deli platter during the day, lots of nice cheeses, meats, dolmades etc spend over £10 and get a pint of dawkins free!

“Great little pub.”

Friendly service. Huge selection of real ale and cider. Games available upstairs. A little gem of a pub when you have a couple of hours to kill.

“Real find of a pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

Obviously locals know of The Portcullis, but for a visitor it has all the charm of a great "find". Hidden away, easy to miss and actually a very small bar too.

Yet it punches well above its weight in terms of pub attributes. Great selection of cask beer, fascinating and worldwide craft bottled beer choices and pots of almost tapas like snacks from £1 each. Winner!

Friendly and welcoming staff - no sense of being treated as a tourist.

Kind of pub you pop into but then stay all evening.

Highly recommended.
