“Bad everything, good venue!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

Ate here today with my mother, we just wanted something as a little pick-me-up after some shopping.
As we entered we weren't greeted even though a waitress walked past, so we picked ourselves a table and ordered afternoon tea, thinking it would be ok to share, the waitress didn't say anything, when our tea arrived it was a tiny pot, then the food...
Well! Three TINY "sandwiches" consisting of egg mayo (was good), One very small slice of ham, and one with the thinnest piece of crappy looking cheese! Really not happy.

The scone was enjoyable, jam seemed very cheap or over cooked more like thick jelly.
We also received the worst strawberry tart I've ever seen, the filling of what I'm assuming to be creme anglaise was over done and not creamy but seemed like it had been mixed with polenta flour, vile!

Bleh!

“Mediocre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

Some department stores' restaurants are always packed. Just think of, for example, a Place to Eat, at John Lewis stores. Zest at House of Fraser has always looked empty when we passed by. So, why not beat the queues and try it?
After our visit it was obvious why the place was so quiet. Dishes took a long time to come and were okay. Okay, nothing more. Service was polite, but again, okay. Prices were high and the atmosphere bland. Worse still, on the top floor and with acres of glass, it was incredibly hot.
Okay, so perhaps I am being a bit tough on them. But I can't describe it as anything other than plain bland. No character, no style. Just plain boring.
Disappointing too was the gluten free options: "Anything without bread" was the maitre'd's answer, although gluten free bread was actually available on request. I just find it disappointing that gluten free options are regarded in a somewhat derisory way yet vegetarians (for whom the choice of being so is mostly a lifestyle one rather than a critical medical one) are far better catered for.
Won't be coming back.

“Worst Waitress ever”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2013

We have eaten in the Zest Bistro many times and it has always been really good. Tonight was a different experience.

We just wanted a sandwich. On arrival greeted by the most miserable waitress ever, think her name was something like Julianna.

My wife ordered a sandwich on white bread. The sandwich arrived and it was on brown bread. My wife politely asked if it could be changed as it wasn't what she ordered. The waitress stood there scowling for a few seconds and then just took it away without saying anything.

Ten minutes later she brought back a new sandwich, slammed it down on the table and walked off.

As per normal the food was good but the attitude of the waitress was appalling.

“Not quite what we expected.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2012

We went in here to take advantage of the 2 breakfasts for £7 deal but should have realised there would be a catch, the catch being that the plates were large but the helpings were tiny. The coffee, not part of the deal, was abysmal. Nice surroundings, though, and doubtless other meals would be better (hard to see how they could be worse).

“Cake to die for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

I've been here quite a few times, it's a really relaxing place to have a giant cup of coffee and a slab of cake. It's very reasonably priced and there's a big choice. If you get here early enough for breakfast I highly recommend the mushrooms on English muffins - delicious!
