I wanted to like this hotel, but unfortunately would not recommend it.

The location is on a main road, opposite a building site. The windows are well glazed so street noise wasn't a problem, but when Bristol has so many beautiful, quiet streets it's a shame not to be staying on one of them.

We stayed in the Courvoisier suite which was large and spacious, although very dark. The dark, airline lounge style carpet didn't help. The bed was large and very comfortable, but pillows were too thin. The bathroom was huge, with a wonderful rain shower. However the wooden toilet seat was chipped and the paint on it was flaking. A minor complaint, but at £220 a night it shouldn't be like that.

The main issue, however, was noise. We could hear the bass from a bar upstairs until 23.30. I appreciate it was Saturday night and that's not particularly late, but this is a hotel and you are primarily there to sleep. In addition, in the morning the radio from upstairs was clearly audible from 07.30 - on a Sunday morning. Don't know if it was coming from a room or a hotel facility, but it wasn't great.

When you're charging rates like this your rooms need to be suitably sound proofed that you can't hear the function rooms at any time in the evening, or radios playing first thing in the morning. People are there to sleep, and an early night or a lie in should be possible.

We love the Hotel Du Vin chain - it's a great model and almost everyone you speak to has something very positive to say about their trips to Henley or York or.... But, on our second trip to The Bristol branch (less than a year after the first and one that we likewise raved to friends about) there was something despondent and lacking in the customer service. Everything became a bit of a chore - whether it was checking in, getting attention to order our breakfast in the morning (25 minutes and not two but three requests later an unapologetic "authorised" breakfast order recipient turned up at our table), asking about parking or simply getting mistakes taken off the deceptively written end bill. What a shame! We still love your bathrooms with those stand alone tubs and huge shower heads lined up, as well as your delicious restaurant, and the sommelier has never let us down, but the main staff could learn some charm and manners to bring the hotel back to our high first impressions.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Dom Perignon - fabulous room

if your a regular visitor to Hotel du Vin then you may find service bit blunt here( we had a few minor problems to which the manager replied "departmental heads have been informed").

Try and avoid staying in the rooms at the front of the hotel due to proximity of major city centre ring road and birds chirping on trees outside, early morning deliveries

We went for afternoon tea at Hotel Duvin, which was brilliant. Service was very good, a few of our party arrived late, but it was no trouble. We were served teas while we waited and were provided with top up the ought out our afternoon.
The lovely selection of finger sandwiches and cake were delicious and very well presented. Atmosphere was brilliant and the waiting staff were polite and friendly.
All in all a very good afternoon & at £14.50 was the best value cream tea we've had in a wonderful setting, highly recommended.

On arrival, the very courteous front desk warmly advised that my room had been upgraded...a great start. The Courvoisier Suite was quite lovely. Unfortunately everything other than one very professional and helpful member of the bar team...was a let down.
Unsmiling staff, doing everything in their power to avoid contact for fear that might result in them being asked to do something. A hotel kitchen incapable of offering any food of any type between 11am and 1200 noon, that it mattered as from the moment we start our meeting at 10.30am until we finished it at 12.15pm not one member of staff came anywhere near us. Stay if you get the chance, lovely space, but I would make plans to meet, eat and drink elsewhere.

I'm not normally one for writing reviews but for this hotel I am compelled to.

Positives...

1. Easy to find and central location.
2. Lovely courtyard, reception, bar and dining area.
3. Quirky, comfortable and clean room (Superior Double).
4. Amazing monsoon shower.
5. Great bed!
6. Attentive staff, especially the night receptionist/barman who supplied drinks, nuts and olives in the bar during the early hours.
7. A working lift.

Negatives...

1. Limited free parking. Nearby NPC carpark was easy to find but cost £15 for 24 hours (with hotel discount (normally £20)).
2. Noise in the corridor outside of room is easily heard and as such noise inside a room is likely just as audible!!

I can't comment on the food because my partner and I had dinner elsewhere and we never made breakfast (finishes at 10am) (I stupidly paid for this in advance too). The olives and nuts in the bar were good though.

I would definately stay again and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Our room was located at the side of the building and we did not experience any traffic or pedestrian...

We've stayed here a few times, and almost always had a great experience, but this time was exceptional. The staff – particularly Will, the asst. manager – go out of their way to be accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble: Hot milk in the morning for the kids, extra towels & blankets, accommodating our little ones, whatever the request, it's done with a smile and good grace. What's lovely is to have smiling, knowledgeable and engaged local staff, who really know their stuff – whether it's about the wine or the food.

It's sad the fish pond has gone – I loved the sound of the tinkling water – but the refurb. in the courtyard looks great. The food is still exceptional, as is – as you'd expect – the wine list. The bathroom in our room (Umani) is amazing – the rainshower and free-standing tub is what I want at home. I love the history of the building too, so much character. So all in all, another great stay.

Room Tip: If you don't want to be disturbed by marauding packs of hen/stag-nighters go for a patio-facing...
