“Tucked away in town”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

We will definitely be back to this charming hotel. A converted sugar warehouse oozing charm and comfort. We had a quiet room round the side with no view but that suited us because we just wanted to sleep not hang out there. The location is great for walking around town or up to the university.

Plenty of public lounge room, great bar and the breakfasts we had were legendary. Kippers (I never cook these at home anymore) perfect, smoked haddock with poached egg, good buffet with pastries and fruit etc. We did not have a dinner here, but it would be fine dining.

We lucked out with one of the hotel parking spots but then did not use the car for two days as we could walk everywhere. Otherwise you need to park in a multi-storey about a block away.

Staff very pleasant and helpful. All round excellent.

I have stayed here before and am always impressed. Its a great hotel with a good feel. Staff all seem genuinely enthusiastic and helpful.

The room was great, ideal for what I seek in a hotel, comfortable but with what you need including a proper desk. Bathroom was great, massive walk through rain show and separate bath tub. Wifi throughout simple, strong and working!

The bar deserves special mention. The drinks menu is extensive and the staff are very knowledgeable about it. This hotel sticks to the old school ways of 'the bar is open until people leave' We did at about 5am in the end - all that time the staff are cheery and helpful.

Breakfast is excellent, cooked to order instead of buffet which is always nice.

Diner in the Bistro also very good. All but one dish around our table of 12 was enjoyed by all.

If you are a light sleeper I would suggest being away from the courtyard which gets noisy from about 6am! Only negative i can think of is that in really hot weather the rooms get very warm (no air con) so remember to leave the windows open!!!!!

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor courtyard if you like to sleep in!

Stayed one night in June. The HdV concept is great and Bristol does this very well - the bar is great, rooms are luxurious with huge beds and bathrooms, extensive drinks list and the breakfast was full of good quality produce.

However, the service was disappointing and soured our experience somewhat. This was the end of a longer trip in the southwest of England and we did not end on a high. Firstly, when we arrived reception were vague and unhelpful as to which ncp car park we should use, as the street parking was full. In the absence of clear instructions, we went for the first signs we saw (this was the first trip to Bristol by car for me). Turns out we parked in the wrong one, as the discount card they gave us on exit did not work so our parking was 25% more expensive than it should have been.

The room was nice but I do agree with the blackout curtains comment made in an earlier review and the mattress was a little too firm for my taste.

Finally at breakfast, we were served coffee for one and although the waiter realised his mistake, no second pot was forthcoming. What was even more disappointing was that as our hot dishes arrived I requested more coffee, and this too did not materialise. It wasn't as if the place was busy as there were only 2 other tables.

I really like bristol and the HdV concept so I hope I was just on the receiving end of some unfortunate oversights.

We stayed for one night at this lovely hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were lucky to get parking outside. Unlike some reviewers we found the staff to be pleasant and helpful without exception. The room was fab and much better than a standard in some other Du Vin hotels. We didn't use the restaurant choosing to eat from the bar menu instead. We sat outside to eat and had a great evening. We have stayed in a number of Hotel Du Vin's and this is one of the best.

We stayed on Friday 13th June for a treat for my boyfriends birthday, we stayed in the Harvey's room and we could not fault our stay.. The room Was fantastic a long with the food and staff, we arrived to find two dog beds and bowls for our dogs which made us feel even more welcome.
We cannot wait to stay again.
Only one thing could improve things and that would be free parking at the hotel as we had to park across the road and charged over £20 however the hotel did provide a 25% discount.
Many thanks to all staff who made our stay perfect!

We had the Friday night special - dinner b&b - which was £250 including wine, food limited to the very short prix fixie. But what a dreary place and with undirected staff seemingly more interested in each other than the customers. The bathrooms are fabulous (at least in the Laroche studio we had) but the gloomy interiors are showing signs of wear and the courtyard wouldn't disgrace a run down pub - how much is a lick of paint, some plants and staff willing to tidy round? Beds are comfortable but very low so won't suit over 40s and, as another reviewer mentioned, the pillows are so thin you could spit through them. At dinner we had service of a kind from 5 different staff, none of whom seemed to have a great grasp of English. Despite this seeming abundance of staff they all managed to leave the restaurant unattended for long periods - we waited ages at the end of the meal with no one there and decided to go back to our room only to be chased by a member of staff to sign our bill. Breakfast was similar with no one around at 9:00, so after politely waiting for 5min we seated ourselves. The waitress eventually appeared (just what are they all up to back there and is there any management?) and when we asked for brown toast she immediately brought us a basket of mixed brown/white cold toast that had obviously been sitting about. At dinner the beef I had was fatty and chewy and I mentioned this at dinner and check out but no one was interested. House wine by the carafe works out at about £22/bottle, expensive for plonk. Check out was farcical with the receptionist unable to explain the how the bill was arrived at and inviting me to look at her computer screen to try and figure it out. In the end I just paid to get out of the place though she did e mail me later with an explanation of sorts. Radisson Blu at the other end of the street would be a much better bet!

Room Tip: Avoid overlooking busy, noisy street
