“Just not quite got it”
Reviewed 18 July 2012

I was excited to go to this new restaurant..but sadly let down by the service and their interpretation of spicy food... Neither hit the mark..perhaps it was just early days and thugs will get better

“Just so boring.”
Reviewed 20 June 2012

I was excited when this resturant opened up and decided to take my partner this week to eat as a treat.

The building looks great inside and out and we were seated almost too quickly if that makes sense...As soon as we got through the door we were ushured straight to a table towards the back of the restuarant. My first complaint... there were 2 tables of 2 people but they were sat on a table of 4 (nice and spacious) as were the 2 other couples who entered after us - but were were given the ONLY table of 2.... why?!

One waitor is particular in your face all night... the owner? I have a waitor thank you... you're just in the way AND if a jug of water is not a problem... why did I have to ask 3 times?!

The mint yogurt in the pickle tray was off and the trays itself were small and tasteless but the poppodoms were lovely.

Our dishes came and just looked like a big mess, sauce with a couple of random pieces of meat, I found it funny when he said 'is that all you want? that was quick!' Dishes dont come with rice... thats an extra £2.50/£3 for a VERY small bowl.

We didnt even have any alcohol and my bill came to over £40 for 2 cokes, 2 dishes (of pretty much just sauce and unimaginative at that), a tiny portion of rice, a pickle tray, a couple of poppodoms and 1 nan bread. I felt like i'd eaten nothing and with the pickle tray off... surely a discount? Nope!

What did I actually eat!?

We wont be returning. Ive had better food and service at the Gangees and in particular - Oh Calcutta!

“A Poor Experience All Round”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

On the face of it, Guru looks great, and is a massive transformation from the Old Fox pub that used to inhabit the building!
Having booked a table, and arriving on time, we were made to wait at least 35 minutes whilst people were ushered in before us.We were largely ignored until our table was ready, and waved to the dining area as almost an afterthought.

The ambitious menu looks good, with some interesting signature dishes. The food is not particularly competitively priced, however not over the top.

The portion sizes are shocking in comparison to the prices, however, and our food arrived luke warm which was disappointing. We pointed this out to our (Rather over bearing and interfering) waiter who just laughed and told us that was how hot it comes from the kitchen!!!!

As curries go this was unspectacular, bland and not good value for money. It wasn't "bad" just not particularly good.Meagre amount of meat in both curries.
Beers are average reataurant prices, although service was very, very slow.

On asking for the bill and paying it, we were due a fair amount of change, which the waiter decided to keep ( we actually saw him putting it in a jar ).It wasn't until we asked for it that he sheepishly brought it to us saying he "forgot"!! we didn't leave a tip!

Not the worst dining exoerience, but not the best.
Over fussy, intrusive waiter, slow service, average food.
There a better curry houses around the area.

“Improving!”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

My friends and I went to Guru the first week it opened and, in all honesty, the food was really good, but the service was all over the place. We put it down to the fact that it was their first week and the restaurant was jam-packed, on top of their carry-out service. Other friends went back a few weeks later and agreed that the food was good, but the service was still pretty bad. And another group of friends have been since and all of them really enjoyed their meals and had no complaints about the service. We've just had a take away curry from there and all 3 dishes were delicious. It seems that things are looking up!

“First class Indian”
Reviewed 7 May 2012 via mobile

Finally open!

And already the best on Gloucester Road. Really good quality and reasonably (not cheaply) priced.

Very nice, smart ambiance as well.
