Our dining experience at Wilkes on Sunday was definitely not of Michelin Star quality.
The starters ranged from mushroom risotto poorly presented, just a splodge on the plate, the crab tian was far too cold and tasteless, the lobster bisque was a nice flavour but too salty and with no presentation finesse.
The mains were not complete dishes as you would expect from any Michelin rated restaurant. There was the meat element, the minutest suggestion of vegetable and no carb. The only carb side available at an added cost, was a totally tasteless wallpaper paste purporting to be creamed potato. We asked for an alternative but they were unable to offer one. They removed the potato as soon as we said it was inedible and they said they would not charge for it. All dishes were tepid or cold. We did tell the management who offered to make us something else but as we were already sampling most of the options on the menu between us this did not solve the problem. We had already been waiting some time so a further wait was not possible. We said we hoped our disappointment would be reflected in the bill.
We had one dessert and one coffee. The first was satisfactory but not memorable and I had to drink the coffee black as they were unable to offer either semi skimmed or skimmed milk.
When the bill came the only reduction was the potato which we hadn’t eaten anyway. We appealed to them again but they refused to accommodate us in any way. Their manner was neither apologetic nor friendly in fact the service throughout the evening was polite but very distant. This surprised us as the write ups for the restaurant say it is a casual and friendly dining experience.
We left feeling very let down.
